Tutoring 2022-2024

Tutee Semester Grade School Reflection

Beginner Fall 2022 3 Prince Edward Our work with this beginner reader was
County focused on manipulating, segmenting, and
blending phonemes so that our tutee could
isolate medial sounds within 3-4 phoneme
words. We reviewed short vowel sounds
with our tutee and explicitly taught short
vowel word families. To help our student
with these skills we used current
strategies (Elkonin boxes, sound lines,
tapping the sounds). Additionally, we
taught high frequency words with the
Hear it-Say it- Spell it method from Brain
Words. Our tutee was full of energy,
confident, and ready to learn!

Emergent Spring 2024 1 Cumberland County In the area of Phonological Awareness, we

worked with this emergent reader with the
foundational knowledge of compound
words. Specifically, our tutee worked with
blending compound words (cup + cake),
segmenting compound words (cupcake =
cup + cake), and deletion of compound
words (cupcake without cup). Additionally,
in the area of oral language, we worked on
vocabulary skills. Finally, we explicitly
taught letters and sounds through a
series of sorts and engaging activities.
This was the most challenging tutoring
experience for me because I have never
worked with Kindergarten before. I
learned a lot during this experience and
ultimately gained more confidence in
teaching emergent readers and coaching
teachers of emergent readers.
Instructio Spring 2024 4 Prince Edward Our work with this reader focused on a
nal County review of open / closed syllables, PA
manipulation on ending sounds, and
consonant LE using sorts, fluency charts,
word ladders ect. Additionally, we worked
on writing using sensory details. Lastly, we
worked on comprehension using a newsela
article about space, something our tutee
was interested in. We started each lesson
connecting our reader/writer lives and
shared what we were currently reading to
increase motivation and engagement with
reading. Our tutee had a great attitude
towards reading and the motivation to
learn!
