Both CVs & Resumѐs:
 Are tailored for the specific job/company you are applying to
 Should represent you as the best qualified candidate
 Are used to get you an interview
 Do not usually include personal interests
 If you are applying for both academic as well as industry (private or public sector)
positions, you will need to prepare both a resume and a CV.

Three commonly used CV types:

Chronological CV: Used format and outlines your work experience and education.
Functional CV: ‘Skills-Based’, puts the spotlight on your achievements and skills
rather than on experience and education.
Combination CV: A format is used as a mixture of both a functional and
chronological CV. It uses both work history and skills to capture the employer’s
attention.
What are the don’ts in writing CV or Resumѐ?

1. Telling Lies - Including even so-called ‘white’ lies is a huge mistake. Hiring
managers are more meticulous than ever before when performing background checks.
If you are deemed to be fit candidate, a careful check is likely and your dishonesty
will probably be uncovered. Even if you get the job, there’s a strong chance that the
lie will eventually come back to bother you.

2. Including Irrelevant Personal Information - You don’t need to include your nationality
and you definitely don’t need to mention your age. Employer isn’t legally allowed to
dismiss your application based on how old you are, you’ll never know if that’s the
reason why he/she rejected you; it is also useless to includes data with ethnicity,
sexual orientation, health status and marital status. Finally, never include a photo with
your CV but if you’re applying for a modelling contract, a picture must be included!

Module 3: Job-Hunting and Application Preparations Page 38

3. Forget to Include a Cover Letter - You should attach a cover letter to your CV
whether it is précised or not. Perfect way to reinforce your application as it allows you
to expand on some of the things mentioned in your CV. However, it should NOT
merely be a CV in paragraph form.

4. Including Unnecessary References - There is no need to contain references or even

say “references available on request” unless the job opening specifies it. You only
have a limited amount of space to deal with.

5. Typing or Handwriting Your CV - This should really go without saying! It makes

your application look old-fashioned and outdated; plus the hiring manager may not be
able to read your handwriting.

6. Fluffing – You should be able to expand on your relevant skills, education and
experience and when this is achieved, you will probably be close to the limit. If not,
don’t include fluff such as a long list of schools you attended or hobbies you enjoy. If
it doesn’t help you get the job, leave it out!

7. Explaining Gaps in Work History - First of all, there won’t be enough space! In fact,
you shouldn’t even try to explain work history gaps in your cover letter. The time and
place for such explanations is during the interview.

8. Adding Negative Information - This means no mention of divorces, failed exams,

driving license points and failed business start-up attempts. Don’t complain about a
previous employer or even give reasons why you left. You’ll be up against hard
struggling for the role, don’t give the hiring manager any reason to reject your
application.

9. Including Jargon Unless Necessary - Adding technical terms and acronyms to a CV is

seldom a good idea. While it can show off your expertise, you have to consider that
hiring manager is probably not an expert in the field and will have no clue what
you’re talking about.

10. Mentioning Money – Mentioning of salaries and benefits can wait until the interview
stage and only when the recruiter asks you the question.

Writing an effective cover letter or an application letter

A cover letter is a one-page document that you submit as part of your job application
(attached with your CV or Resume). It gives information about the educational qualifications
and professional experiences.
Features of cover letters are identified through its content, length and structure with the
stipulated language being used.
Content of the letter
 Beginning of cover letter

Module 3: Job-Hunting and Application Preparations Page 39

The first paragraph of the cover letter should detail the job you are applying for
and, if relevant, where you have heard about the job (for example an
advertisement, or personal recommendation).
 Writing the main body of the letter
In the main body of the letter, you need to show why you are the right person for
the job. You have to highlight the most relevant job experiences and skills as they
relate to the position you are applying for. It is important to demonstrate evidence
of your skills clearly.
 Writing the effective final paragraph
The final paragraph of your cover letter should round the letter off. Leave the
reader with a positive impression in the application and a desire to interview you.

Usage of Appropriate language

Whether applying online or sending cover letter through the post, it is important to
write using appropriate language. Although informal language may sometimes be
acceptable in cover letters, more formal alternatives will create a more
professional impression.

Example:

Informal Formal

Want Would like

Need Require

Talk about Discuss

Get in touch Contact

About Concerning/regarding

Make sure Ensure
