VISIT REPORT TO STRANICH FOR ID & FD FAN
DOCUMENT TITLE:
TESTING
CLIENT DOC. NO.: Rev. 01

BACKGROUND:
On request from FARABI, Mr. S.G. Khare and T. Sriramulu Naidu of ICONS visited M/S Stranich Fans & Duscon India
Pvt. Ltd. (Stranich), On 12 March 2024. Who is supplying ID and FD fans for Heaters 1201-H-01 and 1701-H-01 for
FARABI LAB #4 project. FARABI informed all concerned that the ICONS team will be representative of FARABI. Mr.
Khare will attend the test along with Mr. Sriramulu on 12 March 2024 only, and on the following days of tests shall
be witnessed by Mr. Sriramulu.
The Furnaces are ordered by FARABI on M/S ITT-Energy, who in turn have ordered fans on Stranich.
WISON, being EPC for the job, had sent their representative TPI (Mr. Bala of TUV) to attend tests.
Stranich planned to carry out tests during the period starting from 11th to 15th March 2024.
It is learned during the visit that the above proposed tests are scheduled for Fans for 1701-H-01, namely 1701-
C01A/B (FD fans) and 1701-C-02 (ID fan).
Stranich is represented by Mr. Nair, Manufacturing Head of the workshop.
DAY:1_12-March-2024
SUMMARY OF DISCUSSIONS WITH STRANICH, AND PATH FORWARD
1. Mr. S.G. Khare and T. Sriramulu visited Stranich from 10.00 am to 4:00 pm.
2. A meeting for discussion and clarifications on the Test procedures (MRT and PT) was proposed by ICONS,
before starting the tests. Stranich responded that the test procedures are already approved and there is no
scope for discussions and any adjustments.
3. Given the situation, it was decided as no other option to let Stranich proceed with the tests, as per approved
procedures, and ICONS team will witness the tests on behalf of FARABI.
4. At 12.30 the Mechanical Run Test started for ID fan 1701-C-02, and the test was conducted for 2 hours, with
2 interruptions, due to a power supply problem.
5. Following observations, noticed, and to be actioned by Stranich.
A. While performing the mechanical run test, constant level oiler as well as cooling fan were not installed.
Suggest to install all rotary parts, as envisaged in the assembly, and also install constant level Oiler during
test.
B. Bearing blocks to be dowelled to the support frame.
C. Slotted holes on the Support frame under motor, have welded debris on underside, which should be
cleaned and ground smooth.
6. By 2. 30 mechanical run test is completed.
7. In between the time of 12.30 to 2.30, we have taken Vibration, Bearing housing temperature, Speed reading
for every 30 mins.
8. For information we have attached some photographs below.
9. Stranich has informed that PT will be done for one FD fan only. MRT for two FD fans and Performance
tests for ID fan and one FD fan will be completed in two days i.e. today and tomorrow.

ICONS OBSERVATIONS / NOTES FOR ATTENTION OF FARABI

1. Proposed PT procedure:
Performance test procedure proposed by Stranich comprises of 3 sets of tests, each at predetermined
speed, as per allowable load on the Shop motor. Each test shall be conducted with a different Diaphragm
(Large orifice plate), mounted on the inlet of test set up piping. Essentially the test is aimed at verification
of rated operation point for the corresponding Fan. Effectively there will be 3 points measured on the test
bed. The test readings will be converted to Job inlet density conditions (Thermodynamic calculation), and
rated speed (by Fan law). On the graph these points will be connected, and specified Job rated points shall

be checked for deviation from the curve as mentioned above, to be within acceptable tolerances as
specified in the approved procedure. Using Fan law, and measured test points, curves for reduced speed
shall be plotted. Plotting curves for different inlet damper positions is not envisaged in the procedure, which
requires different set up.
2. ICONS observations about PT test:
In ICONS opinion, we must have a minimum of 5 test points to obtain polynomial curve. Essentially the
Pressure vs Flow curves for Centrifugal machines are of polynomial nature, and minimum 5 test points are
required to plot polynomial curve. Stranich practice of connecting test points to get curve does not
represent correct nature of centrifugal fan performance. As the fan is expected to operate with inlet
damper control, corresponding curves should have been considered in the approved procedure. Shop tests
are performed using a shop motor of 315 KW capacity. For PT calculations Motor efficiency used is the
information from Type test, and no calibration certificate is available for shop motor performance.
Approved ITP specifies MRT and PT to refer to various codes and standards including AMCA 210. However,
the procedure prepared, submitted by Stranich (and approved) is simplified and curtailed and does not fully
comply with AMCA 210 standard.
3. Proposed MRT procedure:
Procedure envisages Fan operation at speed same as rated speed of the fan as per datasheet. Vibration and
bearing housing temperature measurements are done using portable instruments. The test shall be
conducted for 2 hours, and vibration and bearing housing temperature measurements taken every 20 Mins.
Vibrations to be < 2.8 mm/s RMS and Bearing housing temperature to be < (40_ Ambient = 40+36.2=76.2
C.)
4. ICONS observations MRT procedure:
Procedure envisages Fan operation at speed same as rated speed of the fan as per datasheet. On the test
bed, job vibration and bearing temp. measurements probes should have been used to record Vibration and
bearing temp. readings alongside Stranich proposed measurements to verify correctness of job
measurement probes. API 560 calls for overspeed test of fans, envisaged to operate at varying speeds (VFD
drive), at 110 % speed, followed by post test inspection of fan welds, dimensions, and recheck of dynamic
balance of the rotor. Such a test verifies that the rotary parts are adequately designed to sustain dynamic
loads.
5. Noise level:
The noise level around the Fan was found to be an average of 93 dB. For safe operation on site, 85 dB as
maximum is mandated. However, Stranich responsibility in respect of Noise measurement is only for
information. FARABI may like to take up the high noise level issue with ITT-E / WISON to provide suitable
noise attenuation measure, so that noise level around the fans on site is within 85 dB level.
