What I Need to Know
After completing this module, you are expected to:

➢ define a thesis statement;

➢ classify thesis statements as strong and weak; and

➢ locate the thesis statement in the text given.

What’s In

Direction: Complete the phrases below based on the learning you gained from the
previous module.
Day 2
What’s New

What is a thesis statement?

▪ A thesis statement is the main idea of an essay.

▪ It is often a point you want to argue or support in an essay.
▪ It explains to a reader the main idea of the essay, and the writer’s opinion o that
idea.
▪ It is often placed in the introductory paragraph of an essay.

Stating thesis statement is:

▪ not simply answered by yes or no
▪ it is not a topic nor a fact or an opinion
▪ it should tell what you plan to argue, how you plan to argue, and what support
for your claim

Stating a thesis statement in an academic text should comprise the

three important components which are the narrowed down topic or
very specific topic, has a claim which is debatable not just your own
opinion, feeling or only relevant to you and lastly should have at
least three main reasons. These reasons are your guide in
constructing your paragraph and the focus for each of the
paragraph.

What are the three components of a thesis statement?

1. A narrowly defined topic
Example:

Broad Too Vague Narrowly defined topic

Clothing Uniform School Uniform

2. A claim
Example:
▪ I like school uniforms because they make me feel proud of my school. (not
debatable, is only relevant to you)
▪ School uniforms should be required. (is better claim because it is debatable and
socially relevant)

3. Reasons that support the claim (3 main reasons)

Example:
make school safer, promote school’s spirit, save parents’ money
▪ 1st reason- will be the sole focus of your first body paragraph where you will
use evidence and examples to support that reason
▪ 2nd reason- will be the sole focus of your second body paragraph
▪ 3rd reason- will be the focus of your third body paragraph

Thesis Statement: School uniforms should be required because they make school
safer, promote school’s spirit and save parents’ money.

CHECKLIST FOR THESIS STATEMENT DEVELOPMENT

A good thesis statement: A weak thesis statement is:

▪ Explain your subject clearly ▪ An incomplete thought or

fragment
▪ Clarifies your point of view ▪ A simple statement of fact
▪ Justifies your reason for writing ▪ A vague opinion
▪ Supports itself with facts or other ▪ An unsupported declaration
evidence or examples
▪ Presents material in a lively ▪ A simple assertion of information
interesting way with no particularizing of spice

What are the things to avoid in writing a thesis statement?

Major Considerations:
1. The thesis statement should not be too broad.
Example:
Too broad: The world is a magnificent place to live.
Better: Good teachers make Mountain City Elementary a fantastic
school.

2. A thesis statement should not be too wordy.

Example:
Wordy: Some problems with Mountain City Elementary School is that it
needs a larger playground, an air conditioned gym, an auditorium,
restrooms connected to each classroom, running water in the
classrooms, and number of other physical changes to the
building.
Better: Mountain City Elementary needs several changes to make it a
better school.

3. A thesis statement should not be too general.

Example:
Too general: Mountain City Elementary is a good school.
Better: Daily writing practice has led to improved writing skills for the
students at Mountain City Elementary.

4. The thesis statement should not be a title.

Example:
A title: Cost of Living
Better: The cost of living in Mountain City is lower than in most other cities
in the United States.
5. A thesis statement should not be a fact.
Example:
A fact: The average temperature for Mountain City in winter is 34 and in
summer is 75 degrees.
