Principles of Steel Design

Module 7
Eccentrically loaded connection

An eccentric connection happens if the line

of action of the load does not pass through
the center of gravity of group of bolts.

Determine the stress in bolt 1 if 20 mm

diameter bolts are used. The load applied is
160 kN.

From the figure shown, bolt diameter = 22

mm, Determine the following:

1. Shear stress due to load alone

2. Shear stress due to torque

3. Most critical rivet

4. Maximum shear stress

Eccentrically loaded connection

The bolts to be used in the connection

shown are 22-mm-diameter A325N bolts. 1.
Determine the polar moment of inertia per
mm².
2. Determine the load in the critical bolt if P
acts on the centroid of the bolt group. 3.
Determine the load in the critical bolt due to
torsion.
4. Calculate the shear stress on the critical
bolt.
