Laboratory Report

● Font Arial 12
● Single space
● Don’t forget to include the titles for each section
● Structure

Authors Ana Carolina Amaya, Sarah Melissa Barrera, Matias Rodriguez and Santiago Sanchez

Research question (Establish a problem that is possible to be solved with the procedure. You will
explain the problem with real information, you must include the references, at the end of the
problem you have to do the question. This question will guide the whole report. It must be write in a
WH question form. It puts the unknowns in the form of a question or a statement of what needs to
be found by doing the experiment. You can use the following statements to start:

● The problem for this lab was…………………

● The problem we were asked to solve was<

Objectives (They must be 1 General (Same research question including a verb) and 3 specific
objectives. Objectives always must start with verbs in infinitive (To observe, to identify, etc.) they must
be related to the practice and they must be measurable (Not only quantitatively (With numbers) also
qualitatively for example to observe or to identify something.

The general objective must be the main idea of the laboratory practice. The specific objectives
are the action that you follow to achieve the general objective.

Abstract (D a summary of your report in maximum 10 lines) This abstract must be focus on what
we can find in the report.

Key words (At least 5 words that are repeated during all the report)

Theoretical framework (Avoid copy - paste, because in here you will read and do a summary of the
information found, related to the practice). This part must have maximum of 30 lines (Include titles to
separate information if it is necessary) Please avoid images.

Include in here specific references, just in case you copy something. You can use a program
called Mendeley, it can be use with Word.

Procedure (Use a flow diagram to explain the main procedure you will use, including quantities,
follow the example) One flow chart per each procedure.
Hypothesis (Expectations about your results). This part must be developed after the procedure and
reading of what results do you expect. Your hypothesis must be focused on the explanation of the
results not on the results, so you have to justify your hypothesis.

References: Here you have to include all the references you use to get the information. If you
don’t include the references, it can be considered plagiarism. So, your grade will be
considered according to the Manual de convivencia. Again, you can use Mendeley for this
part.

You must assign the following roles in your team to do the lab experience:

Materials Manager

❖ sets up materials before beginning the activity

❖ make sure all materials are cleaned up

Technician

❖ measures accurately
❖ make sure everyone is recording data, diagrams and observations

Variables (Here you cave to identify 3 types of variables: 1. Independent variable, it doesn’t
change during the whole procedure. 2. Dependent variable: It changes according to some
changes throughout the procedure. 3. Controlled variable: It can be controlled by you, for
example you can get the same temperature throughout the whole procedure)

Results (Use charts) In case of your results are based on observations you can use:

Procedure Description

Name of the procedure Describe the results obtained during the lab
experience
Image or photo taken in the lab
experience

In case of your results are based on numeric data you can use:
Procedure Description Variable (Units)

Name of the procedure Describe the results obtained E.g. Temperature (°C)
during the lab experience
Image or photo taken in
the lab experience

Also, include the graphic of your numeric results.

Result analysis: Explain each one of your results. It means you will answer the questions why does
it happen? Here you must include chemical structures and chemical reactions, explaining them and
their relation to your results, the physical concept of electrical conductivity and its relation with your
results. You have to do the explanation based on the theory, look deeply for information to support
your explanations. You have to explain all the results deeply, not superficially, it must include
chemical formulas, reactions and theoretical support. Remember, you have to answer the question
“Why did it happen”. In addition, you have to use cites. Here again you can use Mendeley.

Conclusion: A conclusion is the “Answer” of your objectives. You have to write them precisely and
direct you have to be concrete and make different conclusions according to your objectives. They
have to be supported in theoretical analysis.

References: Here you have to include all the references you use to get the information. If you
don’t include the references, it can be considered plagiarism. So, your values will be
considered according to the Manual de convivencia. Please don’t use pages such as
Wikipedia, wikilinks, yahoo respuestas, monografías.com, quimi ayudas, script. Please use
your book as your basic source of information.

If a partner does not collaborate, let me know on time to take the corresponding action.

Everyone must participate in the construction of the preliminary report, and laboratory report
document. If someone doesn’t participate actively in the process and final report, this person
can’t get the same grade as the group. You will create a document in drive and you’ll invite the
teacher as editors in the file that the teachers will create, this way I can check your participation in
the work. The grade of this term will be based on this report and the inquiry criteria in the rubric.
However, both of them have as a requirement the fulfillment of all the activities given along this term,
only with the purpose of assuring the development of your skills and competencies.
