 Countable and Uncountable Nouns

 Countable nouns can be singular or plural.


 This cup is full.
 These cups are empty.
 We can say 3 cups, 2 girls, ten pounds. We can count them.

 Uncountable nouns can only be singular.


 The water is cold.
 The weather was terrible.
 We cannot say 2 waters, 3 musics, 1 money. We cannot count them

a bottle of water, 3 bottles of water water
a kilo of sugar, 2 cups of sugar, spoons … sugar
a glass of milk, 9 glasses with milk milk

 We use much with uncountable nouns in questions and negatives.


 How much money have you got?
 There isn´t much milk left.

 We use many with countable nouns in questions and negatives.


 How many people were at the party?
 I didn´t take many photos on holiday
 some and any Countable and Uncountable

 some is used in positive sentences


 I´d like some sugar.
 I need some carrots.

 We use some in questions that are requests of offers:


 Can I have some cake?
 Would you like some tea?

 any is used in questions and negatives:

 Is there any sugar in this tea?


 Have you got any brothers and sisters?
 We don´t have any washing-up liquid.
 I didn´t buy any apples.

 The rules are the same for: someone – somebody, somewhere, something (Positive)
no one – no body ( Positive ) – There is no one in the kitchen.
anyone - anybody, anywhere, anything (Questions and Negatives)

There isn´t anybody in the kitchen.


 I have got something for you.
 Hello ? Is anybody here ?
 There isn´t anywhere to go in my town.

 A few and a little

 We use a few with countable nouns.  There are a few biscuits on the table.
 We use a little with uncountable nouns.  I only have a little time.

 A lot of / lots of

 We use a lot of / lots of with both countable and uncountable nouns.


 There is a lot of butter.
 I have got lots of friends.
 A lot of / lots of can be used in questions and negatives.
 Are there lots of tourists in your country ?
 There isn´t a lot of butter, but there is enough.
