A Detailed Lesson Plan in Mathematics V

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the pupils should be able to:
a. recognize when two quantities are in direct proportion
b. state whether the given situation is direct proportion or not; and
c. participate actively in class

II. Subject Matter

A. Topic: Direct Proportion

B. Reference 21st Century Mathletes

PP 174 - 181

C. Materials blackboard, student textbook, LCD Screen

III. Procedure Teacher’s Activity Pupil’s Activity

A. Preparatory Activities

1. Preliminary Activities

 Prayer
Everybody stand up (A pupil will lead the prayer)

 Greetings
Good morning class!
How’s your day? Good morning Sir!
We’re fine Sir!
 Energizer
Really? Let’s see if you are, to make
you more active and alert, let’s have an
energizer.
(Teacher will play a short video) (Pupils will dance together with their teacher)

 Classroom management
Grade V, take your seat and arrange
your chairs. Then, pick up all the pieces
of papers you’ll see Thank you Sir!

 Checking of attendance
Is there any absentee for today?

Very good! Nobody is absent today Sir

2. Drill
Class I have a short story for you.

Nicole is trying to budget her use of cell phone

load so she determined how much she is
spending each time she makes a call. The table
below shows her observations. (the students will read the story)

Minutes of Calls Cellphone load spent

1 ₱6.00
2 ₱12.00
3 ₱18.00
4 ₱24.00
5 ₱30.00

If she is making an average of 30 minutes of

call every week, how much cell phone load is
she spending for that?

Notice how the amount of cell phone load spent

increases as the number of calls increases.
Based on what you have learned from our
previous lesson; we can solve this problem
using proportion.

1minute: ₱6.00 = 30minutes: n

1 x n = 6 x 30
1n = 180
1 1
n = 180

Nicole spends ₱180.00 cell phone load for her

weekly calls.

This problem shows a direct proportion,

wherein as one quantity increases, the other
quantity increases proportionally, and that is our
topic for today.

Proportion sir!
3. Review
Before we proceed to our new lesson, again
class what is our last lesson?

Let me see if you still remember our past Yes, Sir

lesson.

Are you ready?

(The teacher will post their past activity on the

board)
4. Motivation Yes, Sir!
Class lets watch a short video about Direct
proportion.

Are you ready?

(The teacher will present a short video)

B. Developmental Activities

1. Presentation

Our lesson for today is about Direct Proportion.

When two quantities are related such that an

increase (or decrease) in the first quantity
causes an increase (or decrease) in the second
quantity proportionally, then they exhibit direct
proportion.

Example #1
Michelle can type 200 words in 5 minutes, and
she can do 120 words in 3 minutes

Word Minut Proportion or Not?

e
200 5 200 words = 120 words
120 3 5 min = 3 min

The situation represents a direct proportion

since the first and second quantities decrease
proportionally.

Example #2
Sherlyn bought 12 gel pens for ₱120.00, Mark
bought 24 gen pens for ₱240.00.

Pen Amount Proportion or Not?

12 ₱120.00 12 pens = 24 pens
24 ₱240.00 ₱120.00 = ₱240.00

The situation represents a direct proportion

since the first and second quantities increase
proportionally

Example #3
Seven men can paint a house in 12 days, 6
men will do the same job in 14 days.

Pen Amount Proportion or Not?

7 12 7men = 6men
6 14 12days = 14days

This time, the situation DOES NOT represent a

direct proportion because the decrease in the
first column (men) caused the second column
(days) to increase. Moreover, if we are to
analyze the problem, if less people will do the
same job, more time is needed to do it.

Take note that word problem solving involving

direct proportion may be solve using cross
product rule Yes, sir!

Class did you understand?

C. Generalization (The student will read the definition of direct

proportion)
Okay class, again how can we define direct
proportion?

Correct!

D. Application (the student will start answering their activities)

For your activity, State whether the given

situation is a direct proportion or not.

1. Number of text messages to amount of

postpaid load.
2. Distance and time at constant speed.
3. Fare and distance of destination.
4. Number of persons working to time needed
to finish the work.
5. Salary to the number of hours work.
6. Area of square to the length of its side.
7. Cost of electricity to kilowatt hour of
consumption.
8. Number of days a gallon of water last to the
number of persons to drink the water.
9. Speed to length of travel time.
10. Acceleration of a car and its mass.

IV. Evaluation

If x represents the first quantity, and y represents the second quantity, which of the
tables below represent a direct proportion?

X 3 4 5 6
1.
Y 24 32 40 48

X 5 10 15 20
2. Y 12.5 25 37. 50
5

X 11 13 15 19
3.
Y 5 7 9 11

X 185 235 275 325

4.
Y 24 32 40 48
X 2 3 4 5
5.
Y 4 5 6 7
