A Detailed Lesson Plan in Mathematics V

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the pupils should be able to:
a. visualize the ratio of 2 given numbers
b. express ratios in their simplest form; and
c. participate actively in class

II. Subject Matter

A. Topic: Ratios in Simplest Form

B. Reference 21st Century Mathletes

PP 152 - 157

C. Materials blackboard, student textbook, LCD Screen

III. Procedure Teacher’s Activity Pupil’s Activity

A. Preparatory Activities

1. Preliminary Activities

 Prayer
Everybody stand up (A pupil will lead the prayer)

 Greetings
Good morning class!
How’s your day? Good morning Sir!
We’re fine Sir!
 Energizer
Really? Let’s see if you are, to make
you more active and alert, let’s have an
energizer.
(Teacher will play a short video) (Pupils will dance together with their teacher)

 Classroom management
Grade V, take your seat and arrange
your chairs. Then, pick up all the pieces
of papers you’ll see Thank you Sir!

 Checking of attendance
Is there any absentee for today?

Very good! Nobody is absent today Sir

2. Drill
Class I have a short story for you. This story is
about Ivan, and he is also a student like all of
you.

Okay class, let’s all read his story

(the students will read the story)
Ivan is a working students, he works as a
student librarian at their university during his
free time so that he can save for projects and
other incidental expenses. If he works for 2
hours, he will be paid ₱100.00. If he works for 3
hours, he will receive ₱200.00.
How much is he earning for every hour that he
works at the library?

Statement form Colon form Fraction form

2hrs to ₱100 2:100 2/100
3hrs to ₱150 3:150 3/150
4hrs to ₱200 4:200 4/200
1hr to? 1:? 1/?

Now class, based on our examples we can

simply say that the answer is 50 right?

Today our topic is Ratios and simples form, let’s

find out some ways in solving this kind of
problem.

3. Review
Before we proceed to our new lesson, again
class what is our last lesson?
Introduction to Ratio sir!
Let me see if you still remember our past
lesson.

Are you ready? Yes, Sir

(The teacher will post their past activity on the

board)

4. Motivation
Class lets watch a short video about Ratios in
simplest form

Are you ready?

(The teacher will present a short video) Yes, Sir!
B. Developmental Activities

1. Presentation

Our lesson for today is about Ratios in Simplest

Form.

Simplifying ratios is just the same as simplifying

fractions since ratios can be written as
fractions.

To reduce ratios in simplest form, divide the

numerator and the denominator of each ratio by
their greatest common factor (GCF).

The term “simplest form” is the same as “lowest

term” in ratios and fractions.

Now let’s find out the better answer to our first

problem.

Colon Fraction GCF Divide numerator and

Form Form denominator
2:100 1 2 2÷2= 1
100 100 ÷ 2 50
3:150 3 3 3÷3= 1
150 150 ÷ 3 50
4:200 4 4 4÷4= 1
200 200 ÷ 4 50

Notice that the simplest form of the three given

ratios is 1/50.

Therefore, the ratio of the number of hours

spent working in the library to the salary that
Ivan receives is 1:50 which means that for Yes, sir!
every hour that Ivan works at eh library, he gets
₱50.00.

Class did you understand?

Okay, let’s have another example.

Colon Fraction GCF Divide numerator Simplest

Form Form and denominator form
18:36 18 4 18 ÷ 18 = 1 1:2
36 36 ÷ 18 2
4:16 4 4 4÷4=1 1:4
16 16 ÷ 4 4
10:15 10 5 10 ÷ 5 = 2 2:3
15 15 ÷ 5 3
7:10 7 1 7÷1=7 7:10
10 10 ÷ 1 10
21:28 21 7 21 ÷ 7 = 3 3:4
28 28 ÷ 7 4

Looking at the fourth item in our example, the

given is the same as its simplest form. This is
because 7 and 10 are relatively prime.
Numbers are relatively prime it their GCF factor
is 1. If the numerator and denominator in a
given ratio are relatively prime, then the given
ratio is in the simplest form. Yes, Sir!

Is it clear class?

C. Generalization (The student will read the definition of relatively

prime numbers)
Okay class, again how can we define relatively
prime numbers?

Correct!

D. Application (the student will start answering their activities)

For your activity, select 10 pairs of numbers

from the box that are relatively prime and write
them as ratios.

13 36 78 21 34 67 15 27 69 25

IV. Evaluation

Identify if the following ratios are in simplest form. If not, write it in simplest form.

a). 7:11 f). 49:63

b). 26:65 g). 39:91

c). 19:57 h). 77:121

d). 10:11 i). 80:110

e). 24:15 j). 45: 55
