DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS GRADE 8

Relation and Function

I. Objectives:
With-in the period, students are expected to:
a. define the relation and function;
b. interpret a relation and a function;
c. Associate relation and function in real life situation.
II. Subject Matter
Topic: Relation and Function
Materials: Chalk, Chalkboard, PowerPoint presentation

Reference: Grade 8 Mathematics book.

III. Procedures:

TEACHER’S ACTIVITY STUDENT'S ACTIVITY

A. Preparatory Activities

1. Greetings

Good morning/afternoon everyone

Good morning/afternoon sir.

2. Prayer

Before anything else please all stands for our

prayer. So (student) please lead the prayer.
Our father who art in heaven holy be
thy name....Amen

Before you take your seat please pick up the pieces

of paper and arrange your chairs properly.
(Picking up some pieces of paper and
arranging their chairs)

You may now take your seats.

Thank you sir.

TEACHER’S ACTIVITY STUDENT'S ACTIVITY

3. Checking of Attendance

Now I will be checking your attendance first.

Who's absent today? None sir.

Okay, very good there's no absent today. Now are

you ready to our next lesson?
“Yes sir."

B. Review

Before we proceed to our next lesson, what did we (the students will answer)
discuss last meeting class?
We discussed about the sum and the
product of roots of quadratic equation
sir.

(the students will answer)

What are the four methods in solving quadratic
equation? Factoring, completing the square,
extracting the square root and using
quadratic formula sir.
“Okay, Very good"

C. Motivation

Okay class, who among of you want to have a prize? (The students raise their hands.)

So all of you wants to receive a prize. Since you

have already your group, we are going to have a
game called paint-me-a-picture. (The students are excited.)

Do you know how to play that game class?

Yes sir.

Very good! But our game has a twist. The main twist
here is that the other group will be the cause of the
scene and the other group will do the effect of the
scene. When I say freeze everyone will stop moving.
Is that clear?
Yes sir.
TEACHER’S ACTIVITY STUDENT'S ACTIVITY

First, paint-me-a-picture of destroyed environment. (The students will assemble

themselves.)
Okay class, freeze!

Second, paint-me-a-picture of clean environment.

(The students will assemble
themselves.)
Okay class, freeze!

Since all of you did a great picture, everyone will be

receiving an additional 10 points to your quizzes.
(Everyone is happy.)
( Activity)

Okay class, I have prepared for you an activity. This

will be an individual activity.

In this activity, I want you to analyze during our

game if what mathematical concept/s could you
drawn from the game. You may start your activity
now and write it in a 1/2 crosswise of paper.

And also answer these questions:

1. What is a relation?

2. How things relate to each other? (Students will do the activity.)

3. Does the other set have function to the other in
terms of their relation?

4. What is function?

I'll give you 15 minutes to do that.

Okay class time's up.

(Students will stop from writing.)
So any volunteer to share his/her work here in
front? (Someone will present his/her work.)

Very well said! Does everyone have the same

answers with classmates who presented their work?
Yes sir.
TEACHER’S ACTIVITY STUDENT'S ACTIVITY

Very good! Does anyone could relate this (Students will raise their hands having
mathematical concept in real life situation? different answers.)

Very well said class!

D. Discussion

Now, does anyone know what will be our topic It is about relation and function sir.
today?
Very good! Let us give him/her 3 claps.

Let us now proceed to the discussion since you

determined that there is relation in your activity.

What is relation? A relation is any set of one or more

ordered pairs.

Very good! Then what is an ordered pair?

A set of two ordered real numbers
called coordinates.

Very good! Can you consider this a relation?

X Y
Philippin
Manila
es
Jakarta Yes sir.
Indonesia
Bangkok
Thailand

Very good! What is their relation to each other? In the set X they are the capital of the
country in set Y.

Very good! Class, please always remember that set

X is our domain and set Y is our range. Is that clear? Yes sir.

In this figure, is this also a relation?

TEACHER’S ACTIVITY STUDENT'S ACTIVITY

X Y

Yes sir.

Very good! Anyone knows what is the meaning of a A relation in which elements of the
function? domain is paired with exactly one
element of the range.

Very good always remember class that for every

value X or our domain has only one value of Y or our Yes sir.
range. Is that clear?

Very good. Let us go back to the diagram. Is this

relation is a function? Yes sir.

3
Very good! But why? 7 As the definition of a function, there is
4 only one correspond for every number
8 in Set X or domain.
5

Very good! Is this next diagram a function?

X Y

Yes sir.

elements?
Only one-to-many relation teacher.
Very good. Then what relation can't be considering
as a function?
TEACHER’S ACTIVITY STUDENT'S ACTIVITY

Very good. Then what relation could be considering

as a function?
The one-to-one and many-to-one
relation sir.

Very good! Another reminder to everyone, always

remember that a function can always be a relation
but a relation cannot be always a function.

F. Generalization

Are there any questions regarding to our lesson for

today?
None sir.
Let us have a recap.

What is a function?
A relation in which elements of the
domain is paired with exactly one
element of the range.
How could you determine if it is a relation
considered as a function? If it is one-to-one or many-to-one
relation sir.

How could you determine if it is a relation but not

consider as a function?

If it is one-to-many relation sir.

Very good. You all did understand our lesson.

IV. Application

Give what is asked.

1. Define the term "domain" in relation to functions.

2. What is the difference between a relation and a function?

3. Give 2 example each relation that can be consider as function.

4. Give 2 example each relation that cannot be consider as a function.

V. Assignment
For your assignment, please read in advance about relation and function using ordered
pairs, graphs and equations.
