Q3. What are main duties of the third officer?


 Keep watch from 0800-1200 and 2000-2400, assist Master for prepare all
documents and at bridge when berthing and unberthing
 In charge of FFE and LSA, bond store, training and drill for crews on board
 Assist Co for cargo operation and security watch at the port

Q4.What shall the third officer do while you keep the navigation watch?
 Familiarize himself with the procedures of safety management system and
comply with same.
 To keep a navigational watch at sea and at anchor as per Master’s standing
orders.
 To maintain all meteorological equipment and logs and ensure dispatch of
weather reports from vessel on regular basis.
 Conduct procedures and tests to ensure functional reliability of critical equipment
and systems, as directed
 Compliance with the Company’s documented safety and security procedures.
 Carry out emergency duties as per emergency response procedures and as
directed by command and control.

Q5. When do you call the Master to the bridge?


 Restricted visibility
 In heavy traffic
 Received a distress alert or a distress signal has been sighted
 When appear difficulties in maintaining course
 Observed significant difference between the latest and the expected position of
the ship
 On failure to sight land, a navigation mark or obtain soundings ...

 Amendments to the passage plan that require immediate approval by the
Ship’s Master

problems related to essential navigational equipment, alarm or indicator
 Malfunctions of communications equipment or GMDSS radio

regulatory requirements
 Any delay or fail can lead to an increased level of risk, such as collision

Q6. When do you call to the engine room for information?


- 01 hour notices when have pilot on board time
- When have troubles of main engine, navigation light, horn,
- Ballasting and debalasting when ship at the port

Q8. Why must you check the compass error between the gyro compass and
magnetic compass in the watch?
Because of safety of ship direction

Q9. What do you know about the Squat?


Ans. The squat effect is the hydrodynamic phenomenon by which a vessel moving
quickly through shallow water creates an area of lowered pressure that causes
the ship to be closer to the seabed than would otherwise be expected.

Q10. When do you have to change from the automatic steering to manual
steering?
- Berthing, unberthing, anchorage, bad weather, heavy traffic , in narrow
channel, restricted visibility ...

Q11. When finishing the navigation watch, what do you record on the ship log
book?
Ans.
- The position of the ship in Latitude and Longitude at different intervals.
- Time to be noted when Navigation marks are passed
- Time, details and reason if there is any course alteration
- Meteorological and weather conditions including details of sea, swell etc along
with the Beaufort scale that is prevalent

- Movement of the ship at sea including rolling, pitching, heaving etc
- Details of any abnormal condition
- Speed of the propulsion engine and speed of the ship in knots
- If involved in any kind of accidents like stranding, grounding etc. then details
for the same
- Entry to be made if any physical contact with floating object or vessel is made
- Details of the distress signal received
- Entry for what kind of assistance is given to the distress signal sender
- If salvage operation is performed, complete details to be entered
- If there is an oil spill or other pollution accident, position of the ship, time and
complete incident to be recorded
- Record of general watch routines performed including fire watch
- Time of arrival and departure and ETA.
- If berthing or anchoring is planned, time for the same to be noted.
- Heading and Compass error
- Drills and training carried out as well as inspections with regard to stowaways
and security-related measures
- Record of stores, fresh water etc received

Q12. How to check the ship’s position when you keep the anchor watch,? Which
way is better?
Every 30munites check ship’s position. Using 1distance and 1bearing to fix target

Q13. When the ship arrive the port, which document do you prepare for the
master?
Prepared Arrival condition .Including:
 Crew list;
 Bond store list,
 Nil list,
 Port of call,
 Passenger List,
 Effect’s Crew Declaration…

Q14. When the ship is in the port, during the cargo operation, what shall the third
officer do if you are on duty?
 Control Security all visitor embarked and disembarked
 Supported C/O for cargo operation followed Stowage plan
 Preventing Pollution from ship
 Supported Captain for documents before departure
Q15. During the cargo loading, if you find the damaged cargo in the hold, what
should you do?
 Report C/o and Loading Master,
 Stopping Cargo operation,
 Take the Picture and Recorded in log, get instruction from Co

Q16. When the ship is going to meet the PSC inspection, what should you do in the
preparation?
- Prepared all documents, checklist for LSA and FFE
- Maintainance all LSA and FFE in good condition.

Q17. When the ship departs the port, what preparation shall the master do?
Step 1: Having a comprehensive passage plan
Step 2: Working with the Pilot
Step 3: Checking and preparing the machinery
Step 4: Using the appropriate checklist to ensure safe departure

Q18. Besides the navigation and cargo operation watch, the third officer must
responsible for LSA and FFE equipment on board. How often and what do you
inspect the lifeboat ?
- Every weekly , monthly, quarterly, yearly. Especially before arrival port.

Q19. Please tell me some working parts of a lifeboat?


Compass, Hand flare, Mirro, Drinking water, Dry Provisions, First Aid, Flooding
Anchor, Fishing tool, Oars, Life jacket, Immersion Suits..

Q20. How often and what do you inspect the FFE?


Every weekly , monthly, quarterly, yearly. Especially before arrival port.

Q21. How do you check the CO2 system?


- Maintenance and inspections should be carried out in accordance with the ship’s
maintenance plan.
-The onboard maintenance plan should be included in the ship’s safety management
system(SMS) and based on the manufacturer’s recommendations including:
o maintenance and inspection procedures and instructions;
o required schedules for periodic maintenance and inspections;
o listing of recommended spare parts;
o records of inspections and maintenance, including corrective actions
taken to maintain the system in operable condition.

Q23. How many type of garbage on the vessel? Which was permit disposal to the
sea?
A.TYPES: According to revised MARPOL Annex V have 11 categories:
1. Plastics ( Red color ) : prohibited to discharge at sea.
2. Food wastes ( Yellow color) :may be discharged at sea under specific
circumstances/requirements (refer to MARPOL Annex V ).
3. Domestic Wastes ( Blue color ):prohibited to discharge at sea.
4. Cooking Oil ( Brown color ): prohibited to discharge at sea.
5. Incinerator ashes ( Grey color): prohibited to discharge at sea.
6. Operational wastes ( Green color ):prohibited to discharge at sea.
7. Animal Carcasses (Purple color): permitted to discharge at sea under specific
circumstances/requirements
8. Fishing Gear Garbage ( Black color): prohibited to discharge at sea.
9. Electric wastes
10. Cargo residures ( Non-hamful to marine environment)
11. Cargo residures (hamful to marine environment)
B.DISPOSAL OF GARBAGE AS PER ANNEX V

(1) the disposal into the sea of all plastics, including but not limited to synthetic
ropes, synthetic fishing nets, plastic garbage bags and incinerator ashes from
plastic products which may contain toxic or heavy metal residues, is
prohibited;
(a) the disposal into the sea of the following garbage shall be made as far as
practicable from the nearest land but in any case is prohibited if the distance
from the nearest land is less than:
(b) 25 nautical miles for dunnage, lining and packing materials which will
float;
(c)12 nautical miles for food wastes and all other garbage including paper
products, rags, glass, metal, bottles, crockery and similar refuse;
(d) disposal into the sea of garbage specified in subparagraph(b)(ii) of this
regulation may be permitted when it has passed through a comminuter or
grinder and made as far as practicable from the nearest land but in any case is
prohibited if the distance from the nearest land is less than 3 nautical miles.
Such comminuted or ground garbage shall be capable of passing through a
screen with openings no greater than 25 mm.

(2) When the garbage is mixed with other discharges having different disposal or
discharge requirements the more stringent requirements shall apply.
