Problem set 3 – Steam Tables

1- Determine the missing properties and the phase description in the following table for
water

T (ºC) p (kPa) v (m³/kg) u (kJ/kg) h (kJ/kg) X (%) Phase

a 20 500
b 500 0.2
c 200 1400
d 300 0.8

2- Determine the enthalpy of 1.5 kg of water contained in 1.2 m³ at 200 kPa.

3- Find the specific internal energy and specific volume of water at the given states.
Also, show the states on T-V diagram.
a- p = 7 MPa, dry saturated (or saturated vapor)
b- p = 7 MPa, wet saturated (or saturated liquid)
c- p = 7 MPa, moisture content = 5%
d- p = 7 MPa, T = 600ºC
e- p = 7 MPa, T = 100ºC
4- a rigid tank with volume of 2.5 m³ contains 15 kg of saturated liquid – vapor mixture
of water at 75ºC. Now the water is slowly heated. Determine the temperature at which
the liquid in the tank is completely vaporized. Also, show the process on T-V
diagram.
5- A piston cylinder device contains 0.06 m³ of saturated water vapor at 345 kPa.
Determine the temperature of the vapor, the mass of the vapor inside the cylinder and
the piston mass per unit area.
6- A piston-cylinder contains 0.1 m³ of liquid water and 0.9 m³ of water vapor in
equilibrium at 800 kPa. Heat is transferred at a constant pressure until the temperature
reaches 350ºC.
a- What is the initial temperature of the water?
b- Determine the total mass in the cylinder.
c- Calculate the final volume.

d- Find the change in internal energy along the process.

e- Show the process on T-V and p-V diagrams with respect to saturation lines.
7- a piston-cylinder device initially contains 50 L of liquid water at 40ºC and 200 kPa.
Heat is transferred to the water until the entire liquid is vaporized.
a- Calculate the mass of the water.
b- Find the final temperature.
c- Determine the total enthalpy change.
d- Show the process on t-V diagram with respect to saturation lines.
8- A sealed rigid tank has volume of 1 m³ and contains 2 kg of water at 100ºC. The
vessel is now heated. If a safety pressure valve is installed, at what pressure should
the valve be set to have a maximum temperature of 200ºC.
9- A piston-cylinder device contains 50 kg of water at 150 kPa and 25ºC. The cross-
section area of the piston is 0.1 m. Heat is now transferred to the water, causing part
of it to evaporate and expand. When the volume reaches 0.2 m³, the piston reaches a
linear spring whose spring constant is 100 kN/m. More heat is transferred to the water
until the piston rises 20 cm more. Determine the final pressure and temperature and
the work done during this process. Show the process on a p-V diagram with respect
to saturation lines.
