Year 7 Design and Technology

Semester 1/2
TOPICS:
▪ Design Considerations
▪ Workshop Induction
▪ Custom Lolly dispenser

Teacher: Mr Bagley

Name: ____________________________

1
In this section create a design brief for your desk tidy by answering the following questions and merging them into one
paragraph:
1. Who is the lolly dispenser for?
2. Where will it be placed?
3. What does it need to hold?
4. What size will it be?
5. When does it need to be finished by?
6. What colour will you paint it?

Design Brief

A Design Brief describes how you will solve the problem and includes specifications,
constraints and limitations of the design.
Explain in three to four sentences what you will do to solve the above problem/need:

2
Criteria for Success
In order to effectively design and create a solution to the problem you described above, you
must create a set of criteria to determine if you have been successful or not. The criteria
should be written in a way that if the answer to the question is “Yes,” then you have
achieved the criteria.

Create FIVE criteria for success:

1. Example – My lolly dispenser will be free from sharp edges so it is safe for me to use

2.

3.

Research Existing Solutions
In order to see what is possible and to gather inspiration for your designs, it is good to research
existing solutions to your design problem.

Glue two pictures of current designs into the boxes below and then evaluate them using annotations
and the PMI method.

P = Positive. Aspects of the design that you like.

M = Minus. Aspects of the design that you dislike.

I = Improvements. Ways that you can improve the design. These generally follow a M.

Brainstorming / Ideation
Now it’s time for you to be creative! This stage is about coming up with as many different ideas as
possible. In the space below, brainstorm 10 or more different designs that could solve your problem.

7
Development of Ideas
Select your best idea from the
previous brainstorming stage.
Sketch the idea below in greater detail
including annotations. Include multiple
views including the top, front and side
view. You may also wish to include
exploded views. See the example to the
right of an orthographic drawing.

This section requires you to draw a front,

side , top and 3D view of your chosen
desk tidy design. Include colour, feature
descriptions, the measurements (can be a
rough idea).
