This is an individual assignment. Late submissions will NOT be entertained.

Submission deadline: 20 January 2024

1.0 Introduction

This assignment is specially designed to fulfill a continuous assessment, which represents

20% of the overall coursework mark for CEV602. It is an individual work.

2.0 Programme Outcomes and Course Outcomes

There is one (1) Course Outcome (CO) and one (1) Programme Outcome addressed by this
assignment, as shown in Table 1.

Table 1: Mapping of CO and PO

CO1: Evaluate the chemical engineering PO3: Ability to design component, system
fundamentals and engineering judgement in and process for complex chemical and
a design project (C5). environmental engineering problems with an
appropriate consideration on health, safety,
society and environment.

3.0 Learning Outcomes

At the end of this assignment, the students should be able to:

1. Understand the concept of heat pinch.

2. Design networks by utilizing pinch point.
3. Establishing an algorithm for designing network which require minimum utility
(MUMNE) .

4.0 Knowledge Profiles (WK) and Complex Problem Characteristics (WP)

This assignment requires the students to identify, analyse, propose and justify the solutions to
complex problems (WP1, WP3) with required knowledge profiles (WK2, WK3, WK5) to be
demonstrated by the students.
5.0 Tasks to be carried out

The PFD diagram of a plant of the production of ethylene from ethanol is shown in Appendix 1.
The temperature of the streams (oC) are shown in the box. The stream condition is listed in
Table 1.

From the PFD:

1. Identify the streams those require heating and cooling and calculate the heat content
(Q) for each stream identified in Joule.
(10 marks)

2. Design the heat integration for the heat exchanger network using the MUMNE algorithm:

• Choose a minimum approach temperature of 10 oC and construct a Temperature

Interval Diagram.
(10 marks)
• Construct the cascade diagram and determine the pinch temperature.
(10 marks)
• Determine the minimum number of heat exchanger above and below the pinch.
(10 marks)
• Determine the heat exchanger network above and below the pinch.
(15 marks)
• Construct the MUMNE network diagram.
(10 marks)

3. Design the revision PFD based on the new heat exchanger network.
(15 marks)

4. Calculate the cost of heat exchanger network without and with heat integration. Use bare
module cost to determine the cost of equipment (HE). Use the following assumptions:
Assumption:
• Only the effect of Q will be considered in this case.
• The other variables effect will be considered as the same for all HE:
✓ Shell and tube heat exchanger with u-tube head type
✓ U = 10 kJ/hr m2 K
✓ ΔTLMTD = ΔT.
✓ f = 1.
(10 marks)

5. Optimize the heat exchanger network using Aspen Plus/Hysis.
