Quarter 4 – Module 3: Week 5 and Week 6

Synthesizing Essential Information Found in Various Sources

What I Need to Know

This module is designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help
you how to synthesize essential information found in various sources. The scope of
this module permits it to be used in many different learning situations. The
language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary levels of students like you.

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. define what synthesis is;
2. compare and contrast the content of reading texts with the same
topic; and
3. write an argumentative paragraph that takes a stand about a certain
topic.

Synthesizing Information
Found in Various Sources

In this lesson, you will learn how to synthesize information by reading articles
or based on the news you have listened to or watch from different media sources.
Aside from keeping yourself updated about what is happening especially during
these trying times, the activities will further develop your reading skills and
comprehension.

What’s In
Let’s test first your knowledge gained about the various sources of
information from your previous lesson.
Directions: Identify the following sources whether they are Primary or
Secondary. Write your answers on your English notebook.
MATERIALS TYPE
1.Newspapers
2. Videos
3. Audio Recordings
4. Textbooks
5. Articles

What’s New

ACTIVITY 1: Take a look! Study the illustrations below.

Can you identify what reading comprehension strategy is implied by each of the
following illustrations?

Is it Analyzing? Is it summarizing? Or is it synthesizing?

The pictures illustrate how synthesizing information from various

sources is done. Let us move on to learn more about this process.
The following are some examples to give you an idea of how to
synthesize with different topics.
Example One:
So, let’s start with two quotes about Stonehenge from different sources.
Stonehenge is the historical landmark in England.
First Quote:
“We know that people were buried there, and that the stones are aligned in
astronomically important ways. We also understand, because of the chemical
composition of animal bones found nearby and the provenance of the stones,
that people travelled hundreds of miles to visit Stonehenge.”

2
Second Quote:
“It was believed that these particular stones had many healing
properties because in Preseli, there are many sacred springs that are
considered to have health-giving qualities…”

To synthesize, we must considerthe

two main ideas:
First Quote: Stonehenge was thoughtto
be a burial ground due to bones being
buried near the stones.
Second Quote: Stonehenge is also
thought to have been used for its
healing properties due to stones on
sites.
Now, arrange the jumbled phrases inside the box in order and combine
the ideas from these into a new one.

Although we would need more sources to corroborate the theory,

this is a good example of the process of synthesizing.

What Is It

What is Synthesizing?

Synthesizing is similar to baking a cake. When we bake a cake, we

combine all of the separate ingredients – eggs, flour, sugar, butter, etc.
– to make a new thing, a cake! When we synthesize, we take what we
already know and mix it with what we have learned from reading and
discussion to create new ideas and understandings.

Learning to Synthesize can be challenging, but there are few different

support strategies to make it easy.

When readers synthesize information, they bring together facts

from multiple sources to create an overall understanding of the
material. Readers blend their background knowledge, new information
from the reading, and facts learned from discussions to develop a
deeper level of comprehension.

The REST Method

One easy approach to synthesize is the REST method:

• R – read two different sources about a topic and record

ideas.

• E – edit notes and combine concepts that are similar.

• S – synthesize by combining notes with what you already

know about the topic.

• T – think about your new ideas and connect them to what you
already know.

The ADD Method

ADD is similar to REST, but it can be used with just one text. The
advantage of ADD is that it helps you learn to integrate your learning
with what you already know and do discussions with others.

• A – what you already know about the topic.

• D – what you learned during the reading on the same topic.

• D – what you learned during the discussion of the topic.

I think of ADD as a stoplight. A is the red light, where you stop and
think about what you already know before moving on. During the read,
you proceed with caution (yellow light) and process new facts about the
topic. The green light is the discussion, when you talk with peers and
discuss what they have learned about the subject.

4
Venn Diagram

You can use this method to record facts about two topics, which
go in the large outer circles and then record overlapping facts and
ideas where the circles overlap. You can add information at each step
– prior knowledge, reading, and discussion. From this diagram, you
can formulate your own ideas about the topic. However, keep in mind
that Venn Diagrams only work well with simple topics and
comparisons.
