Session 15

Create Turning Tools

In this session we will learn how to build different types of turning cutters using the Tool
Manager. We will build:
#1 80 DEG, .8mm Radius Insert, OD tool
#2 80 DEG, .8mm Radius Insert, ID tool
#3 6mm Groove tool

1. Open project file turning_tools.vcproject


• Launch VERICUT
• File > Open
• Shortcut = Training
• File = turning_tools.VcProject
• Set your Working Directory by clicking on the toolbar icon
• Display the Project Tree

2. Add tool #1, 80 degrees diamond insert tool


• In the Project tree, select Setup : 1 , right-click, Expand All Children
• In the Project tree, right-click on Tooling:Turning_tools > Tool
Manager…
• Add > Tool > New > Turn
• Insert Type = C-80 degree diamond
• L-Length = 13
• Thickness = 5
• R-Corner Radius = 8
• A-Lead Angle = 5
• Color = 6:Light Goldenrod
• Add

Note: The same view rotation commands as in VERICUT can be used in the Tool
Manager
3. Add tool holder defined as a sweep file
• In the Tool Component panel, Component Type = Holder

• Model file
• Browse…
• Shortcut = Training
• File = turning_tool_holder1.swp
• Open
• Add
• Assembly tab
• Rotate, Increment = 90, X-, Y-

4. Add Holder Block by referencing the Block1 assembly


• Tool Component tab

• Reference
• Pick…
• Select Files
• Search
• Select block1, or the description turning tool block,RH
• OK
• Add
• Assembly tab

Move the block away from the holder to locate properly
• Position = 30 0 50
• Modify
• Under the Assemble tab select next to the first Mate
• Select the top of the holder and the bottom of the groove as shown below

• Close

• Click in the field under Gage Point for tool 1
• Rotate the tool assembly, pick the Gage Point as shown below

5. Save the Tool Library


• File > Save As…
• Shortcut = Working Directory
• File = my_turning_tools.tls
• Save
6. Add tool #2, 80 degrees diamond insert tool
• Add > Tool > New > Turn
• Insert Type = C-80 degree diamond
• L-Length = 13
• Thickness = 3

• R-Corner Radius = 8
• A-Lead Angle = 95
• Color = 6:Light Goldenrod
• Add

7. Create sweep for bottom of holder


• In the Tool Component panel, Component Type = Holder

• Sweep Profile
• Add points as shown below

• Highlight point 10,10


• Filet Size = 10
• Create Fillet

• Filet Size = 10
• Create Fillet

• Thickness = 15
• Color = 10:Dim Gray
• Add
• Assembly tab
• Rotate, Increment = 90, X+, Z+ Z+
• Position = -10 0 0
• Modify

8. Add a cylinder to the holder above the sweep


• In the Tool Component panel, Component Type = Holder

• Cylinder

• Radius = 10
• Height = 200
• Color = 10:Dim Gray
• Add
• Assembly tab
• Position = -10 0 15
• Modify
9. Add Holder Block by referencing the Block2 assembly
• Tool Component tab

• Reference
• Pick…
• Select Files
• Search
• Select Block2 or the description turning tool block, Boring Bar
• OK
• Add
• Assembly tab
• Position = 0 0 100
• Modify
• Close

• Click in the field under Gage Point for tool 2


• Rotate the tool assembly, pick the Gage Point as shown below

10. Save the Tool Library
• File > Save

11. Add tool #3, 6mm Grooving tool


• In the Project tree, right-click on Tooling:Turning_tools > Tool
Manager…
• Add > Tool > New > Turn

• Groove Insert
• Insert Type = Square, single end
• W-Width = 6
• L-Length = 8
• Thickness = 5
• R-Corner Radius = 1
• C-=4
• D-=4
• Color = 6:Light Goldenrod
• Add
• Assembly tab
• Position = 1 0 1
• Modify

12. Add tool holder defined as a sweep file
• Tool Component tab, Component Type = Holder

• Model file
• Browse…
• Shortcut = CGTECH_TRAINING
• File = turning_tool_holder3.swp
• Open
• Color = 10:Dim Gray
• Add
• Assembly tab
• Rotate, Increment = 90, X-, Y-

13. Add Holder Block by referencing the Block1 assembly


• Tool Component tab

• Pick…
• Select Files
• Search
• Select block1 or the description turning tool block,RH
• OK
• Add
• Assembly tab
• Position = 50 0 0
• Modify
• Close
• Click in the field under Gage Point for tool 3
• Rotate the tool assembly, pick the Gage Point as shown below

14. Save and close the Tool Library


• File > Save
• File > Close > Yes (to use this tool library in the current session)

15. Reset the Cut part


• Once the simulation stops, Reset Model

16. Cut the part
• Play to End

17. Exit VERICUT


• File > Exit
• Ignore All Changes
