MATH2111 Higher Several Variable Calculus

Test 1 – Part 2
School of Mathematics and Statistics, UNSW Sydney
T1 2024 Week 3

Deadline for submission is Friday, 1st of March 2024, 6pm.1

Submit your solution as a PDF in the Moodle Assignment activity.
Handwritten solutions and solutions produced with latex (Overleaf) are fine. If you write your solution on paper
and take a photo/scan with your camera, make sure you use a scanning app/functionality rather than the camera
of your phone (think: readability and small file size). The submitted file must be pdf!
Marks are given for correctness, use of English and full sentences, and for the correct use of logical connectives.
See the Guidelines on Mathematical Writing from (from MATH1131/1141) on the Moodle Page for general comments
on mathematical writing if you are unsure.

Problem 20 (worth 6 points)

Let W ⊆ R3 be the subset of R3 defined by

W = (x, y, z) ∈ R3 : x2 − y 2 z 2 > 1 .

Prove that W is not path-connected. Argue carefully why every step is true. If you are using a lemma or a theorem
from the lectures (from MATH2111 or from 1st year), state it clearly and argue carefully why the assumptions of
said lemma or theorem are satisfied.

You may discuss this question with your peers. But you have to write down the proof on your own.

Marking Scheme
• Presentation/ level of details (2 points): Full marks are given when all details are included, theorems/lemmas
are stated or referenced appropriately, and it is clearly spelled out why the assumptions of such theorems are
satisfied.

• Correctness (2 points): Full marks are given for a correct solution, except for possibly 1-2 minor inaccuracies.
1 point is given if the solution is mostly correct, but contains a non-negligible amount of inaccuracies or some
grave thinking mistake. No points are given for a false solution or grave logical mistakes.
• Use of English (2 points): Full marks are given if meaningful sentences and paragraphs are used, and mathe-
matical formulas and statements are embedded in the sentence structure. No points are given if the writing
is barely understandable due to the lack of English sentences and the lack of logical connectives between
mathematical statements.

1 Submissions will be accepted without penalty until the cut-off time Sunday, 3rd of March, at 6pm. This is to accommodate such

things as technical submission problems just before the deadline. No submission will be accepted after the cut-off time.
