Academic Help and Resources

The transition into college can be difficult for some, especially those who are student-athletes or

those who have commitments outside of college. During the first semester of college, students

may struggle to balance academic commitments with other responsibilities. This struggle is

especially seen for student-athletes, who must balance tough practice schedules, game travel, and

the pressure to perform well in their sport while keeping up with their schoolwork. As a result,

students may feel unorganized miss deadlines, or fall behind in class. Fortunately, TAMIU offers

helpful resources such as the ACE center, which provides free tutoring and academic help. The

ACE center brochure is readily available at the TAMIU admissions front desk or given in UNIV

class, making it accessible to all students.

When going through the brochure, you can see all the support services ACE has to offer to the

students of TAMIU. They have various free academic assistance programs to develop essential

study skills and learning techniques necessary for academic achievement. From personalized

advising to tutoring sessions and access to educational resources, ACE is dedicated to motivating

and encouraging students to succeed in their studies. “The mission of ACE–Academic Support is

to narrow students’ learning gaps through tutoring, supplemental instruction, and study skill

workshops so you are more prepared for classes, submit quality assignments on time, and

experience an optimum college time at TAMIU.”( tamiu ace) The core values of this program are

putting students first, professionalism and respect, and having a growth mindset! In addition, as

part of the First-Year Experience program, ACE provides peer mentors who provide vital

assistance and support to students as they adjust to university life. These upperclassmen mentors

provide insights into campus life, academic and personal skill development, access to campus

resources, and friendly faces to approach for help and support throughout the UNIV 1201 and

UNIV 1302 courses. Attendance and active involvement in mentor meetings are encouraged,

emphasizing the importance of peer mentorship opportunities in promoting student success at

TAMIU.

Expanding on the overview of the ACE center, it is important to recognize the unique

programs and services it provides to assist TAMIU students in their academic journey. Aside

from tutoring and educational aid, the ACE center offers a variety of courses and study skills

sessions to improve students' learning experiences and promote academic achievement. These

courses address various subjects, including time management, effective study practices, test

preparation, and academic goal planning. Furthermore, the ACE center offers supplemental

teaching sessions led by experienced peer tutors who give students extra help in complex

subjects. The ACE Center equips students with crucial study skills and learning approaches,

allowing them to overcome academic hurdles and reach their full potential.

College is challenging for every kind of student, especially those pursuing difficult majors. As a

student-athlete, you must maintain constant dedication throughout the year, whether in or out of

season for your sport. This includes attending all practices and workouts, which may be mentally

and physically challenging, especially when combined with regular class attendance. The

demands of training and the pressure to succeed in their sport while meeting coaches'

expectations can place additional strain on their academic responsibilities. Similarly, non-athlete

students who juggle different responsibilities, such as having a job or caregiving for a family

member in need, face similar challenges in managing their academic workload. In such

circumstances, the ACE center serves as a critical resource to TAMIU students needing

academic support. Whether students need help understanding course material, organizing

assignments, or preparing for exams, the ACE center is there to offer guidance and support.

With tutors available for all subjects and flexible time slots to suit various schedules, students

can conveniently access the help they need. Tutors also provide virtual lessons, which may be

beneficial for people who struggle to find time in their day for extra help. Regardless of your

academic success, you can still take advantage of the tools offered, whether you're looking for a

second opinion on an essay or simply using the area to work on assignments either alone or with

others. Open six days a week, the ACE center is a reliable and easily accessible resource for

TAMIU students who want to thrive academically despite whatever obstacles they may face.

In conclusion, adjusting to college can be difficult for students, especially those with additional

obligations, such as student-athletes or those managing outside commitments. However, with the

help of organizations like the ACE center, TAMIU students may overcome these hurdles with

vital academic guidance and support. The ACE Center contributes significantly to student

achievement by providing a positive educational atmosphere by offering individualized advising,

tutoring services, seminars, and peer mentorship programs. The ACE center shows the university

community's fundamental values by putting students first, upholding professionalism and

respect, and encouraging a growth mindset. Students who use this resource to their advantage

will see academic success and make the most of their college experience!
