Read the passage and answer the questions that follow:

The Amazing Coral Reefs
Coral reefs are incredible underwater ecosystems that are teeming with life. They are found in
warm, shallow waters and are often called the rainforests of the sea because of their vibrant
colours and the incredible diversity of marine life they support. (1)

Coral reefs are built by tiny animals called coral polyps. These polyps secrete a hard substance
called calcium carbonate, forming the structures we recognize as coral reefs. The colours of the
reefs come from the algae living inside the coral polyps, providing a home and food source for
both the coral and the algae. (2)

One of the most amazing things about coral reefs is the variety of creatures that call them home.
Fish of all shapes and sizes, from tiny clownfish to large groupers, find shelter and food among
the coral branches. Colourful sea anemones, with their waving tentacles, provide a safe haven for
clownfish. Sea turtles gracefully swim through the water, and curious dolphins occasionally visit
these underwater wonders. (3)
Coral reefs are not just beautiful; they also play a crucial role in supporting marine life. Many fish
rely on coral reefs for protection and breeding. The reefs also act as natural barriers, protecting
coastlines from the impact of storms and waves. (4)

Sadly, coral reefs are facing threats from pollution, overfishing, and rising sea temperatures.
When the water becomes too warm, corals can expel the algae living inside them, causing a
phenomenon known as coral bleaching. Without the algae, the coral turns white and becomes
more susceptible to diseases. (5)

Conservation efforts are essential to protect these valuable ecosystems. Researchers and
environmentalists work together to raise awareness and implement measures to safeguard coral
reefs, ensuring that future generations can continue to marvel at the wonders of the underwater
world. (6)
