Application of Integrals Case Based Questions

1. A child cut a pizza with a knife. Pizza is circular in shape which is represented by
𝑥² + 𝑦² = 4 and sharp edge of knife represents a straight line given by 𝑥 = √3𝑦.

Based on above information, attempt any 4 out of 5 subparts.

(i) The point(s) of intersection of the edge of knife (line) and pizza shown in the
figure is (are)
(a) (1, √3), (−1, −√3) (b) (√3, 1), (−√3. −1)

(c) (√2, 0), (0, √3) (d) (−√3, 1), (1. −√3) (d) 2 sq. units (v)
(ii) Which of the following shaded portion represent the smaller area bounded by
pizza and edge of knife in first quadrant?

1
(iii) Value of area of the region bounded by circular pizza and edge of knife in first
quadrant is
𝜋 𝜋
(a) 2 sq. units (b) 3 sq. units
𝜋
(c) 5 sq. units (d) π sq. units

(iv) Area of each slice of pizza when child cut the pizza into 4 equal pieces is
𝜋
(a) π sq. units (b) 2 sq. units

(c) 3π sq. units (d) 2π sq. units

(v) Area of whole pizza is
(a) 3π sq. units (b) 2π sq, units
(c) 5π sq. units (d) 4π sq. units

solution

(i) (b): We have, 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 = 4…(i)

and 𝑥 = √3𝑦…(ii)
From (i) and (ii), we get
3𝑦 2 + 𝑦 2 = 4 ⇒ 4𝑦 2 = 4 ⇒ 𝑦 2 = 1 ⇒ 𝑦 = ±1

From (ii), 𝑥 = √3, −√3

∴ Points of intersection of pizza and edge of knife are (√3, 1), (−√3, −1).

(ii) (a) :

√3 𝑥 2
(iii) (b) : Required area = ∫0 𝑑𝑥 + ∫√3 √4 − 𝑥 2 𝑑𝑥
√3
2 √3
1 𝑥 𝑥 4 −1 𝑥 2
= √ 2
[ ] + [ 4 − 𝑥 + sin ( )]
√3 2 0 2 2 2 √3
1 3 √3 √3
= [ − 0] + [2sin−1 (1) − ( + 2sin−1 )]
√3 2 2 2

2
√3 2𝜋 √3 2𝜋 𝜋
= + − − 3 = sq. units
2 2 2 3

(iv) (a): We have, 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 = 4

⇒ (𝑥 − 0)2 + (𝑦 − 0)2 = (2)2
∴ Radius = 2
1 1
Area of 4 th slice of pizza = 4 𝜋(2)2 = 𝜋 sq. units
(v) (d): Area of whole pizza = 𝜋(2)2 = 4𝜋 sq. units

2. Consider the following equations of curves 𝑦 = 𝑐𝑜𝑠 𝑥, 𝑦 = 𝑥 + 1and 𝑦 = 0.

Based on the given information, answer the following questions.
(i) Find the point at which the curves 𝑦 = 𝑐𝑜𝑠 𝑥 and 𝑦 = 𝑥 + 1 meet.
(ii) What is the area bounded by the given curves?

solution

(i) Curves 𝑦 = cos 𝑥 and 𝑦 = 𝑥 + 1 meet at point 𝐶(0,1).

(ii)
0 𝜋/2
Required area = ∫−1 (𝑥 + 1)𝑑𝑥 + ∫0 cos 𝑥𝑑𝑥
1 3
= 2 + 1 = 2 sq. units
