In royal events, this performing art usually featured at the opening and closing ceremonies or
for special occasions with numerous singers, dancers and musicians dressed in national
costumes (Ao Dai) in ancient style, and headband. This clearly shows the pride in traditional
costumes as well as the cultural beauty of Vietnamese people in general and Hue people in
particular.
Nha Nhac Cung Dinh Hue first appeared in the Ly Dynasty (1010-1225) and developed
during the Le dynasty (1427-1788). However, it was not until the Nguyen Dynasty (1802-
1945) that Hue Royal Refined Music represent for the dynasty’s power and longevity Nha
Nhac Cung Dinh Hue reached its peak and became a symbolic form of music in Vietnamese
royalty and an indispensable part of a specific ritual.
In 2003, Hue Royal Refined Music was recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural
Heritage of Humanity. At present, it has been introduced to the world and has a strong
reputation for its uniqueness.
The music of the Hue royal refined music is characterized by a unique sound and style
achieved through a diverse range of instruments, both traditional and foreign. These
instruments are grouped into four categories: string, wind, percussion, and vocal:
String instruments in this genre comprise the dan bau (monochord zither), dan tranh
(16-string zither), dan nguyet (moon-shaped lute), dan nhi (two-string fiddle), and
dan tam thap luc (36-string hammered dulcimer).
Wind instruments include the sao (bamboo flute), ken (double-reed pipe), trong
(drum), and mo (wooden bell).
The percussion section features instruments like the trong chau (big drum), trong
com (rice drum), song loan (clapper), phach (wooden sticks), and dia (cymbals).
