evidenced by crying,
fussing, withdrawal or
resistance.
NURSING INTERVENTIONS
Goal: After 8 hours of rendering appropriate nursing interventions, the child will experience
reduced anxiety and display appropriate range of feelings.

1. Assess the degree of anxiety (mild, moderate or severe) the child is experiencing to develop an
appropriate care and management depending on the child’s needs.
2. Explain the purpose of every procedures such as taking body temperature or administration of
certain medication at the child’s level of understanding to reduce fear of unknown and gain trust.
3. Listen to special requests from the child if possible to gain cooperation.
4.Encourage parent or caregiver’s presence and participation in discussing ways to manage the
child’s anxiety to enhance ability to support the child.
5. Identify thoughts and feelings that led to current anxiety onset to enhance understanding of
triggers.
6.Provide child with some means of involvement with procedures such as holding a piece of
equipment or helping put on bandage to provide sense of control, encourage cooperation and
support child’s coping skills.
7. Ensure that the parents is with the child during procedure to reduce concern and the child’s fear.
7. Maintain a calm and reassuring environment, minimize noise and avoid hurrying through
interactions and care to assist the child in building trust and achieve emotional stability.
8.Let the child perform simple tasks during hospitalization and for self care such as pouring
water and marking amounts on record at the bedside to promote independence.
9. Introduce diversional activities to the child such as playing with their favourite toy,
scribbling with crayons and paper or watching cartoons to reduce stress and keep the child
motivated throughout their care in the ward.
10. Converse using brief and simple sentences, touch the child with affection and maintain
eye contact to reduce the child’s fear and anxiety, clarifies misconceptions and promotes
cooperation.
11. Encourage involvement of child and parents in planning and intervention of care to
promote participation and adaptation to hospitalization, reduces anxiety, allows
demonstration of love and affection for the child.
12. Provide encouragement and appreciation to the child and parents for their participation
to promote positive feedback and decreases fear of rejection by staff due to their behaviour.

Evaluation: After 8 hours of rendering appropriate nursing interventions, the child experienced
reduced anxiety and display appropriate range of feelings.
