Biological Science Technician

The Southern Research Station will soon be advertising a GS-0462-07/08/09 Biological Science Technician position. The position is full-time, term (1 year, renewable up to 4 years, contingent on available funding) with the Center for Forest Disturbance Science Research Work Unit and located in Clemson, South Carolina. ABOUT THE POSITION: This position will provide field (70%) and office (30%) support to scientists for research in multiple aspects of fire ecology. The work team is charged with conducting research in support of prescribed burning and fuel reduction in the southern Appalachian Mountains and southeastern Piedmont. The team conducts interdisciplinary studies on such varied topics as wildlife, soils, entomology, pathology, economics, vegetation, remote sensing, and fire behavior. The selected candidate will assist scientists, other professionals, and technicians to install study plots, implement treatments such as fire, and collect data. Knowledge of field data collection, data entry, and plant identification are mandatory. Adequate knowledge, experience, and/or training in all three areas must be demonstrated. Training and physical capability sufficient to maintain a firefighters red card at the moderate level is will be a requirement of the position but is not prerequisite. The position will require strenuous work in uncomfortable field environments. It will also require extensive travel throughout the Southeast. Relocation expenses are not available. LOCATION: Lehotsky Hall on the campus of Clemson University, Clemson, SC. ABOUT THE SOUTHERN RESEARCH STATION: The Southern Research Station is responsible for conducting research, development and application needed to create the science and technology to sustain and enhance southern forest ecosystems and the benefits they provide to the south and the nation. The Station employs about 550 people. About 20 Station employees are located at Clemson. THE COMMUNITY: The City of Clemson is located in Pickens County, South Carolina. Pickens County is in the northwestern section of South Carolina, and Clemson is in the southern portion of the county. Over the past thirty-five years, the population of Pickens County has more than doubled. In 1960, the population was 46,030; by 1990, it had increased to over 93,000 residents. The growth of the City of Clemson has been even faster. The climate in the Clemson area is moderate with an average temperature of 60.6 degrees Fahrenheit. The average temperature during January is 42.3 degrees Fahrenheit, while the average July temperature is 78.3 degrees Fahrenheit. The average annual precipitation in the Greater Clemson area is 47.54 inches.

TRANSPORTATION: Clemson is served by jet and commuter airlines with service into Greenville-Spartanburg Airport (45 miles away). The Clemson Area Transit operates bus routes throughout the city. EDUCATION: The Pickens County school system serves the Clemson Area with Daniel High School (http://www.pickens.k12.sc.us/daniel.hs), Edwards Middle School (http://www.pickens.k12.sc.us/Edwards.jhs), and Clemson Elementary School (http://www.pickens.k12.sc.us/clemson.es/). Higher education is readily available at Tri-County Technical College (http://www.tricounty.tec.sc.us/), Southern Wesleyan University (http://www.swu.edu) and Clemson University (http://www.clemson.edu/). RELIGIOUS INSTITUTIONS: Most major religions are represented within a 50 mile radius. CULTURAL AND RECREATIONAL ADVANTAGES: Clemson offers a range of cultural activities ranging from symphony to top name country and western artists. Events are frequently scheduled at Clemson Universitys Brooks Center (http://www.clemson.edu/Brooks/index.asp), and Greenvilles Peace Center (http://www.peacecenter.org/) and Bilo Center (http://www.bilocenter.com/). Clemson University is the home of the South Carolina Botanical Garden. Clemson is a haven for outdoor sports enthusiasts with golf courses, tennis and swimming. There are numerous lakes, rivers, waterfalls, and hundreds of miles of hiking trails in the area. Hunting and fishing opportunities abound in the area as well.
