Agusan del Norte was created as a province on June 17,


1967, by virtue of Republic Act No. 4979.

History

During Spanish era, Agusan was once undivided and under the jurisdiction of Surigao

1911 - Agusan was separated from Surigao by the American Colonial Government.

1942-Japanese Imperial Army landed in Northern Agusan.

1945 - the province was liberated from the Japanese invaders by the Philippine Commonwealth Forces
and American Forces.

1967 - Republic Act 4979 divided Agusan into 2 independent provinces; Agusan Del Norte and Agusan
Del Sur.

August 16, 2000 the seat of provincial government was transferred from Butuan City to Cabadbaran
through Republic Act 8811.

Bilikutsa

It's coconut toffee, basically. It's a sweet snack/dessert that is


always handmade with a recipe that is passed on from
generation to generation.

Nilusak

Nilusak (or nilupak) is cassava (or "balanghoy" in


Butuanon, the local dialect) that is mashed
("nilusak") with sugar and margarine, sprinkled
with grated mature coconut, and rolled into ping-
pong sized balls.

Nilambiran

It is made of two kinds of glutinous rice, the purplish red


and the white, cooked separately with coconut milk,
sugar and salt, and delicately intertwined ("nilambiran"),
then wrapped in banana leaves. The result is a delightful
brown-and- white-striped suman. You eat this as is,
without any sweet condiment. The salt does the job of
accentuating the sweetness that seems to be
deliberately withdrawn to leave you wanting more.

LISAGAN FESTIVAL (Sunday after the fiesta)

The ‘Lisagan Festival’ held on Sunday after the


fiesta includes street dancing similar to Sinulog
Festival and fluvial procession at the Agusan River
and Baug River.

The town parish doesn’t allow major public


gathering like disco, live bands and other similar
events the night before the fiesta.

SAGINGAN FESTIVAL (October 17)

The profound connection to bananas is the


driving force behind the town's annual Sagingan
(banana farm) Festival, a lively celebration that
not only highlights bananas but also honors the
unwavering dedication of its residents during the
harvest season.

SUMAYAJAW FESTIVAL (AUGUST 15)

Held during the town fiesta of Jabonga. It is a thanksgiving celebration for the bounties showered by the
Heavenly Father through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Lady of Assumption.

BALANGAY SHRINE

It is the repository of the Butuan Boats or Balangays


and other artifacts excavated at the site that prove of Butuan's pre-Hispanic existence as well as its rich
cultural heritage.

BOOD PROMONTORY ECO PARK

Located not far from the Magellan first landed


in the Philippines, the Bood Promontory Eco
Park remembers an equally momentous
occasion in the country’s history - it’s first
Christian Mass. On Easter Sunday in 1521, Magellan and his crew erected the first cross on
Philippine soil, and held the first mass, with two brother-kings of Butuan and Mazzaua in
attendance. Magellan stayed here for seven
days, helping with the rice harvest and
listening to tales of gold and riches.

DIOSDADO MACAPAGAL BRIDGE

The Macapagal Bridge in Butuan City, Agusan


del Norte, spans the Agusan River, connecting
the city's east and west. Named after President
Diosdado Macapagal, it is a key transportation link.The bridge is a landmark. It's beautiful and
with amazing landscape along the river view.

History

Agusan derived its name from the Agusan word agasan, meaning "where the water flows", referring to
the Agusan River that splits the land and meanders south to north in a kilometre (160 mi) rush to Butuan
Bay. It is third largest river in the country.

1942-Japanese forces invaded the province and later liberated in 1945 by the joint Philippine
Commonwealth Forces and American Forces.

June 17, 1967 - Republic Act No. 4696 divided Agusan into Del Norte and Del Sur.

January 1970 - the same law provided the capital of Agusan del Sur be the municipality of Prosperidad.

Famous Food/Dishes and Delicacies In Agusan Del Sur

Sinuglaw is a dish originating from Agusan del Sur in the


Philippines. It combines "sinugba" (grilled pork) and
"kinilaw" (raw fish cured in vinegar or citrus), creating a
flavorful mix of smoky and tangy tastes. This culinary
delight showcases the region's love for both grilled and
fresh seafood.

KALIGA ON FESTIVAL (every APRIL)

Kaliga is a thanksgiving festivity of the


Higaonon, signifying "to thank god" for every
one of the favors, abundant reap, effective
chasing, campaign, establishment of new
chieftain, birth of a tyke and any recuperations
from hardship and sickness. The entire festival
as a rule keeps going a few days.

KAHIMUNAN FESTIVAL (every third Sunday of


January)

The Kahimunan Festival is an annual event on the


occasion of the fiesta celebration of the Sto Niño
in Barangay Libertad

OGNOC CAVE
Ongop Cave is one of the best spelunking destinations in the province of Agusan del Sur. It is a very
pristine cave less-known even in the neighboring provinces since it is hidden deep in the jungles. It has a
huge opening and inside the cave, waters are coming from different directions but local drink it believing
that it is a source of healing that cures different illnesses.
