Enhancing Learning Outcomes through Experiential

Learning): Using Open-Source Systems to Teach Enterprise Systems and Business Process
Management. Journal of Information Systems Education, 26(3)

Purpose (What are the objectives for writing the paper?):

 Provide experiential learning to beginning business students

 Investigate the benefits of Open-Source enterprise and process management systems
 Demonstrate that teachers can efficiently integrate enterprise systems into the
curriculum to benefit student learning

Design / Methodology / Approach (How are the objectives achieved? Include the main
methods used for the research and the approach to the topic.):

In this research, the authors used an experimental pre-test/post-test design. This means they
measured learning outcomes by collecting data from participants before and after the hands-on
exercises.

Findings/ Conclusions (What was found in the work, and what are the major conclusions)?
This will refer to analysis, discussion, or results.):

In this discussion, the authors are referring to a study that explores the benefits of experiential
business students learning about enterprise systems and business process automation. The
study especially focuses on the use of an open-source ERP system called Odoo in two courses:
IS (Information Systems) and BPM (Business process management). Besides, the study found
that the experiential learning exercise improved student understanding, engagement, and
learning outcomes in the IS course, while in the BPM course, there was an increase in learning
but not in understanding or engagement. This discussion turns around the findings and
implications of this study on the effectiveness of experiential learning in these specific courses.

Practical Implications (What outcomes and implications for practice, applications, and
consequences are identified?):

The study found that experiential learning with the Odoo system had positive outcomes for the
IS course, but not as much for the BPM course. In the IS course, considerable learning
outcomes were accomplished, while the BPM outcomes showed a substantial increase in
learning but no improvement in engagement or interest.

Critique (Which parts of the paper do you like? Which parts of the paper do you not like?
Why?):

The part I like in this paper is the way authors emphasized the importance of experiential
learning. Nowadays, experiential learning is crucial because it provides a more immersive and
interactive approach to education. With the advancement of technology and the increasing
need for practical skills, traditional classroom learning alone may not be sufficient.
Experiential learning allows individuals to apply their knowledge in real-world situations,
fostering critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity. Additionally, it helps in developing
communication and collaboration skills, which are essential in today’s dynamic and
interconnected world.

However, we also believe that experiential learning can also improve an employee's
contribution to the company. Through experiential learning, employees can gain a deep
understanding of their roles and responsibilities within the company. They can apply their
knowledge and skills to solve real challenges and make informed decisions. This will improve
their individual performance and contribute to the success of the company.
