Non parametric test - Kruskal-wallis test for the following data

25,70,60,85,95,90,80
60,20,30,15,40,35
50,70,60,80,90,70,75, Significance Level α = 0.05 and One-tailed test

Solution:
Step-1: Take the hypothesis
Null Hypothesis H 0 : All groups are equal

Alternative Hypothesis H 1 : Atleast one group is not equal

Step-2: Ranking all group values

Name of related sample
A for sample-1
Size in Ascending Order Rank Rank for A Rank for B Rank for C
B for sample-2
C for sample-3
15 1 B 1
20 2 B 2
25 3 A 3
30 4 B 4
35 5 B 5
40 6 B 6
50 7 C 7
60 9 C 9
60 9 B 9
60 9 A 9
70 12 C 12
70 12 C 12
70 12 A 12
75 14 C 14
80 15.5 C 15.5
80 15.5 A 15.5
85 17 A 17
90 18.5 C 18.5
90 18.5 A 18.5
95 20 A 20
Total 95 27 88

The rank total for A is R 1 = 95

The rank total for B is R 2 = 27

The rank total for C is R 3 = 88

Step-3: Compute test statistic

R 2j (95) 2 (27) 2 (88) 2
∑ n = 7 + 6 + 7 = 2517.0714
j

n = total number of samples = 20

12 R 2j
H=
n(n + 1)
∑n - 3(n + 1)
j

12
= (2517.0714) - 3(20 + 1)
20(20 + 1)

12
= ⋅ (2517.0714) - 63
420

= 8.9163

Step-4: α = 0.05

Step-5: Compute the degrees of freedom (df).

df = (3 - 1) = 2

Step-6:
The Critical value of chi-square is χ 2(0.05, 2) = 5.9915

Since the computed H(8.9163) > critical χ 2(5.9915)

So we reject the null hypothesis (H 0).
