 The effect on the student
 A paragraph on the application of the learning methodology

What is a case study?

A case study is an in-depth study of one person, group, or event. In a case study, nearly every
aspect of the subject's life and history is analysed to seek patterns and causes of behaviour.
Writing up your case study

 Introduce the topic area of the report.

 Outline the purpose of the case study.
 Outline the key issue(s) and finding(s) without the specific details.
 Identify the theory used.
 Summarize recommendations.

Competency-based Learning (Education)

The competency-based education (CBE) approach allows students to advance based on their
ability to master a skill or competency at their own pace regardless of environment. This
method is tailored to meet different learning abilities and can lead to more efficient student
outcomes.
Competency-based education is defined as “a system of instruction, assessment, feedback, self-
reflection, and academic reporting that is based on students demonstrating that they have
learned the knowledge, attitudes, motivations, self-perceptions, and skills expected of them as
they progress through their education.”

Case study:
Johanna is a high school student who is struggling to be in the same level as her class mates and
lack motivation, she has decided to give up and not focus on school because she feels as she
does not belong to that class.
The English teacher decides to assign some individual assessment to each one of her students,
in order for them to express their opinion and talent on a specific topic that they can choose
freely, because in this way they can speak up about what concerns them and about what they
like most. The teacher has not created a table of points or grades, because she will correct
students based on their own pace, not regarding to the level of the whole class or to the other
students.
How can Competency-Based Learning help?
Competency-Based Learning can help through this type of assessment through self evaluation
expressing feelings related to the topic the students can choose freely, also they might have the
moment to self-reflect being able to speak about everything that concerns them about their
future, education and other personal feelings. By this learning method, students would not be
racing between them, but they will write, bearing in mind that they are in race with oneself and
are able to talk about what motivates them while progressing through their own feet. This
might motivate the students and can make them feel better about the abilities they have,
without worrying about being at the same level as the class mates.
Application of Competency-Based Learning: Competency-Based learning focuses on
advancement of their own ability to master in any field or lesson they are having difficulties.
This can be helped through self-reflection and feedback, because it can make students, and
especially Johanna to improve her opinion of worthiness, can make her forget about the race
with her classmates or the environment she is part of.
Teacher creates a safer environment for the students and this helps each of them to feel more
valuable and less pessimistic about their worth or what they are achieving in comparison with
other students. Students are helped to demonstrate the skills they have and also to have a
moment of self-reflection on the competences they own, by expressing them in the way they
know and in the amount they know, by being confident in what they are writing without having
the peer pressure.
At the end teacher decides to make a compliment to Johanna for the way she wrote, and to
motivate her to write more in order to improve herself and her abilities in comparison with
herself and not her friends. Through this method, Johanna will start to participate more and to
increase the motivation to speak and study.
