Assessment instructions

Objective
To apply and demonstrate the knowledge and skills acquired in the Business Analytics
BMGT 7074 module through an individual project. This project involves working with
datasets to conduct statistical analysis, prediction (regression or classification),
clustering, and making informed recommendations based on the analysis.

Instructions
Project Setup

- Projects are to be completed individually.

- Select a (or more if one dataset is not enough to address the report requirements)
dataset from any domain containing both numerical and non-numerical data.
Datasets can be sourced from industry/company connections or online data
repositories like Kaggle.
- Obtain approval for your chosen dataset as early as possible.
- Ensure that datasets from companies have prior approval from competent
authorities to avoid legal or ethical issues.

Data Preparation and Description

- Provide a detailed description of the dataset, including descriptive statistics.

- Pre-process the data with appropriate justification for each step.
- Conduct an Exploratory Data Analysis with visualizations such as scatter plots,
boxplots, etc.

2

Statistical Analysis

- Perform at least one 2-sample t-test or ANOVA (or their non-parametric

equivalents) with clearly stated hypotheses and interpretation of outcomes.
- The decision goal guiding each statistical test should be clearly stated.

Prediction (Regression or Classification):

- Conduct at least one regression analysis involving two or more independent

variables (IVs) preferably combination of numerical and categorical IVs, and
compare results with atleast 2 other models’ (eg., regression tree, KNN) outcomes.
Alternatively, conduct a classification analysis with two or more IVs (preferably
combination of numerical and categorical IVs), comparing results with atleast 2
other models’ (eg., classification tree, KNN) outcomes.
- Use K-fold cross-validation and a test/validation dataset for model validation.
- Clearly articulate the decision goal for each predictive model.

Clustering:

- Perform clustering analysis using at least two variables.

- Explain the decision goal behind the clustering analysis.

Interpretation, Evaluation, and Recommendation:

- Provide a thorough interpretation of all analysis outcomes.

- Evaluate the effectiveness of different models and make recommendations based
on these outcomes. Include both model selection and business recommendations.
- For each section, include key outputs/results (screenshots from Python output or
Excel) with proper captioning. Additional details can be provided in the appendix.

Report Structure:

- The report should be structured with clear sections for each of the above
components.
- Include citations/references for data sources and wherever recommendations are
based on external sources.
- Submit raw data files and analysis files (Excel or Python) along with the report.
- Naming conventions for submissions:
o Report: BMGT7074_Sem 2_2024_assign2_report_student ID (doc or pdf)
o Raw Data: BMGT7074_Sem 2_2024_assign2_rawData_student ID (xlsx or
csv)
o Analysis File: BMGT7074_Sem 2_2024_assign2_analysis_student ID (xlsx
or ipynb)

Use of Turnitin
The new Turnitin policy effective from September 2022 can be found via this link. You
are expected to be familiar with it. It is important to know that the reference list and
quotations are included in the overall similarity report, and that these matches are
expected and not problematic.

For more information on how to interpret your similarity index report, please refer to
this link.

Submission instructions
A submission link will appear on the module’s Moodle page under the ‘assessment’
section via Turnitin drop box, where you will be able to upload the elements of your
portfolio. You are advised to submit the assessment well ahead of time since you need

to account for any technical glitches on the day of the submission as it coincides with
other modules’ deadlines and Turnitin server may experience some web traffic.

If you are an ISP student, you will be given an extension as per your allowance in
banner. Also, if you avail an exceptional circumstances (ECs) extension, this will be
reflected on your deadline and a separate drop box would appear for ISP students
and/or those granted ECs

How your work will be marked

Once the submission date has past your module tutors will begin to mark your work.
There are a number of phases to this which ensure fairness is maintained across the
whole team including a pre-marking calibration meeting, marking and post-marking
internal moderation of grades. Following internal moderation, a sample of work is
reviewed by the External Examiner for the programme to ensure that the standards
applied are comparable to those at other institutions. To read how your work is
moderated please go to your programme handbook for details.

The use of assistive technology

The use of materials created by third parties and/or websites and/or Artificial
Intelligence (AI) software/paraphrasing/image tools, and passed off as one’s own work
as prohibited. This includes all forms of contract cheating, such as the use of, running
of, or participation in, auction websites and essay mills to attempt to buy or use
assessments or answers to questions set. It is also an offence to provide one’s own
work to others with the intention of personal gain.

Student may, however, use assistive technology such as AI to find concepts or

trends that the student would then start researching upon. In such case, student
needs to fill a declaration form and attach it to the end of submitted assessment as an
appendix. Students are highly advised to complete the ‘guidance on using AI’
course found on Moodle by searching the course name and self-enrolling in it or follow
the below link:

The declaration form can be found on the right-hand column in Moodle or by following

Feedback
Feedback on your work will be provided in a range of ways at various times throughout
this module, and different feedback will serve slightly different purposes. Feedback is

designed to support your learning and help you to improve subsequent work, so you
need to engage and get the most out of the feedback provided.

Please note that feedback is provided throughout the module not just on formally
assessed tasks. It will be provided on your work and contribution in class, on the formal
assessment tasks and, in some circumstances, during student office hours.

If you would like further information about feedback, or how to use it, please talk to
your academic tutor on this module or your Academic Adviser or Programme Lead.

Assessment feedback will normally be provided within 21 working days of submission.

Please note that all marks are provisional until they are ratified by an Examination
Committee.
