The Assignment Brief: From the beginning of time people have
always been storytellers. At its essence, oral storytelling is a story
spoken to an audience. Throughout history, it's taken many forms
including songs, poetry, chants, dance, masks and spiritual
physicality. A good story is at heart a seducer, and the storyteller and
audience build a unique dialogue and interaction as they participate
in the creation of living art.
In this module, we will explore the origins of storytelling, different
aspects of storytelling and narratives and look specifically at African
Tales, Myths and Fables.
Based on the research and writing skills you’ve acquired in
Academic Development during term 1, write an academic essay that
addresses the following 3 questions:
1. Explain what are oral traditions, and how it informs our
understanding of story and narrative?
2. What historical roles have the oral traditions played in African
culture?
3. What is the role of the modern African storyteller today?
*NB This final paper must be no less than 600 words.
