Activity 1
Why do the seasons change?
Objective
After performing this activity, you should be able to give one reason why the seasons
change.
What to use

What to do
1. Study Figure 1 carefully. It shows the Earth at different locations along its orbit around the Sun.
Note that the axis of Earth is not perpendicular to its plane of orbit; it is tilted. The letter “N” refers
to the North Pole while “S” refers to the South Pole.
Figure 1. The drawing shows the location of the Earth at different times of the year. Note that
the axis of Earth is not vertical; it is tilted. (Not drawn to scale)
Processing Questions:
Q1. In which month is the North Pole tilted toward the Sun– in June or December?
Q2. In which month is the North Pole tilted away from the Sun– in June or December?
Q3. Based on your answers to the previous questions, why do you think June is warmer in
the Northern Hemisphere while December is colder?

What to do
2. Study Figure 2 carefully. The drawing shows how the Earth is oriented with respect to
the Sun during the month of June.
Q1. In June, which hemisphere receives direct rays from the Sun– the Northern Hemisphere or the
Southern Hemisphere?
Q2. Which hemisphere do you think experiences summer, the Northern hemisphere or the
Southern hemisphere? Which hemisphere do you think experiences winter, the Northern
hemisphere or the Southern hemisphere?
Q3. Based on your understanding of how the Earth's tilt affects the seasons, explain why
the Northern Hemisphere experiences winter while the Southern Hemisphere experiences
summer during December.
