Boundary Layers

OBJECTIVE
To investigate the characteristics of the velocity distribution in a boundary layer on smooth
and rough surfaces of plates.

INTRODUCTION
Boundary layer represents a layer of fluid adjacent to a solid surface. When fluid flows
over the surface, the velocity of the fluid changes depending on the state of the surface.
The changes of velocity depend on the type of fluid as well as the condition of the surface.
Understanding the behavior of fluid within the boundary layer is usually important in order
to understand more about losses and gain related to the flow.

INSTRUCTIONS
1. Identify parameters to be measured in the experiment.
2. Identify and describe sensors used in the experiment.
3. Identify experimental procedure for testing the velocity distribution within boundary
layer when fluid flows over two different conditions of solid surface.
4. Collect data based on the defined parameters and procedures.
5. Analyse the data based on relevant theory with cited references.
6. Propose ways of improving data collection and analysis of data.
7. Present the analysis based on collected data and present the proposed works that can
be done to improve the results as obtained in the first round of experiment.
8. Repeat the experiment by considering all the presented recommendations

9. Conduct uncertainty analysis for the recorded data and discuss the accuracy of the
data.
10. Evaluate the data using relevant theories and equations. The use of suitable software
for data analysis is also recommended.
11. Read at least four references, from published works, that are related to the experiment
done in this exercise. Compare your results with the published works. Observe the
differences and discuss your observations.
12. Give conclusion for the experiments.
