Module 1 - Tutorial Problems

1. Calculate mean, median, mode from the following data:

16, -12, 0, -8, 3, -17, 5, -11, 9 & -5

2. Calculate mean, mode and the three quartiles from the following data

Marks above: 850 750 650 550 450 350 250 150 50

No.of.students: 3 10 20 45 85 115 125 133 140

3. Find the mean and standard deviation from the following data

Weight in kgs and frequency: 93-97(2) 98-102(5) 103-107(12) 108-112(17)

113-117(14) 118-122(6) 123-127(3) 128-132(1)

4. Find the mean and standard deviation from the distribution below

Time(hrs): less than 2 2 and <4 4 and <6 6 and <8 8 and <10 10 and <12 12 and <14

Frequencies: 25 36 66 47 26 18 2

5. Calculate mean deviation about mean/median/mode, standard deviation and coefficient of

variation from the following data:
Marks 80 70 60 50 40 30 20 10
less than
No. of 100 93 82 70 55 34 20 8

6. Find median of the following distribution and hence find mean by empirical formula if
its mode is 29.54
Annual Less Less Less Less Less Less
sales than than than than than than
(in 1000s) 10 20 30 40 50 60
Frequency 4 20 35 55 62 67

7. Find the missing frequencies of 150 items, given its median is 146.25.

8. Goals scored by football teams A and B are given below.

No. of goals 0 1 2 3 4
scored in a
match

A 27 9 8 5 4
No. of
B 17 9 6 5 3

Which team is more consistent?

9. Two workers on the same job show the following results over a long period of time:
Worker A worker B
Mean time of completing the job 30 25
Standard deviation (minutes) 6 4
Which worker appears to be more consistent in the time he requires to complete the job?
Which worker appears to be faster in completing the job?

10. The mean and SD based on 60 observations were calculated as 276 and 22 respectively. But,
later it was found that an observation 372 in the data was wrongly taken as 327. Find the
corrected mean and SD.
11. For a group of 200 candidates, the mean and SD of scores were found to be 46 and 12.6
respectively. Later it is found that there two scores 48 and 51 was mistakenly taken as 45 and
50. Find the corrected mean and SD.
12. The mean and standard deviation of 9 times are 43 and 5 respectively. If an item of
value 3 is added to the set, find the mean and variance of these 10 items.
