Implementation of Facial Recognition Technology for Enhanced Safety Measures at
Campus Grounds

Introduction

Facial recognition is a technology capable of matching a human face from a digital

image or a video frame against a database of faces to confirm an individual’s identity.
This is done by analyzing and identifying unique facial features, such as the arrangement
of eyes, nose, and mouth, along with other distinguishing characteristics like facial
contours and skin texture. Although less accurate than fingerprint recognition, it is often
favored because of its contactless nature.

Facial recognition has been in development since the 1960’s it uses a computer
application that reads facial features and compares them in its collection of data. By 1970
facial recognition accuracy had improved dramatically and it could also read hair color
and lip shapes. A key milestone came in 2001 when law enforcement in the US used facial
recognition for the very first time to help identify Super Bowl spectators potentially
causing disruption or harm.

One of the key advantages of facial recognition lies in its versatility and
convenience. One of the problems in entering the university is if you forget your
identification card. Unlike this facial recognition offers a smoother and faster way of
identification. Users simply need to present their faces for scanning, eliminating the need
for physical tokens and reducing the risk of security breaches.

In the realm of security, facial recognition technology has revolutionized access

control and surveillance practices. Integrated into access control systems, this allows
individuals to gain entry to areas with minimal hassle, while automatically detecting and
denying access to unauthorized persons. This capability enhances security measures in
various settings, which we can use for the university campus entrance gate.

Facial recognition-enabled surveillance cameras provide real-time monitoring of

specified areas, aiding in the detection of suspicious activities and individuals in turn we
can minimize contact with authorized individuals and focus our manpower on
immediate risk or threat. As it is being used in many places such as Japan, China, and
Argentina their police officer have access to this which helps them in preventing or
capturing misdemeanors or crimes and immediately identifying them. This can be used
on a smaller scale which the project seeks to implement.

Despite its numerous benefits, facial recognition technology raises significant

ethical and privacy concerns. Nevertheless, facial recognition technology has more
benefits and is worth the risk. Improving the regulatory framework and standards helps
in securing individual data and giving ample transparency to calm the affected
individuals .

i. Objectives

● Improve the security around the campus as well as remove the risk of fake IDs.

● Minimized the time taken for a student to go through the campus gate.

● Reduce the manpower that is being used at the entrance.

ii. Statement of the Project

As said in the title, this project aims to implement facial recognition technology as a
solution to enhance the security measures within Bataan Peninsula State University
(BPSU). The project seek to enhance safety protocols and reduce the reliance on manual
surveillance and minimize operational hassles associated with traditional security
methods.

To meet the objectives some needs must be addressed, this involves placing facial
recognition cameras strategically at key entry points in the campus and integrating them
with existing security systems. Next, training and education. Security personnel and
relevant staff must be trained in using and interpreting facial recognition technology.
Testing and calibration of facial recognition systems are also vital steps. Testing ensures
the accuracy and reliability in various conditions and scenarios while regular
maintenance and updates keep the technology effective and up to date.

Upon implementation, several outcomes can be expected. Firstly, security measures

will be significantly improved, reducing unauthorized access and quickly identifying
potential threats. This leads to a safer environment for students, faculty, staffs and
visitors. Secondly, the allocation of resources will become more efficient, with security
personnel focusing on critical duties such as emergency response rather than routine
tasks.

In conclusion, the implementation of facial recognition technology at campus

grounds for enhanced safety measures is a comprehensive process requiring careful
planning, consideration of privacy concerns, and transparent communication with
stakeholders

iii. Significance of the Study

The project aims to implement facial recognition on the university campus gate.
this in which can improve the safety and security of the students and personnel of the
campus.

This project will benefit the following:

Administrators: Campus administrators have the responsibility to make

policies and can decide to improve the security of the university. In addition to
security, it also gives data regarding security concerns around the campus. This can
stop the risk of using fake IDs and improve the accountability of the university.

Security Agencies: The security personnel workload can be reduced to

monitoring the system and lessen the personnel facing the students. This can also be
used by police officials if any incident occurs on the university campus.

Campus Employees: face recognition can allow campus faculties and

professors easier entrance to the university. This also can restrict unauthorized
entrance. The data collected in the system can also act as an attendance of the
professors along with their students.

Parents and Guardians: Parents and Guardians will certainly like the
additional security implemented in a learning institute for their children. This will
give them assurance and peace of mind about the well-being of students
Students: being the most numbered in school, they will benefit the most from
the increase in safety and security on the campus. It ensures a safe learning institution
that provides a place where you can study with peace of mind. They can also benefit
as an addition when forgetting identifications.
