Introduction:
Finding parking spaces in urban areas can often be a challenging and time-
consuming task, especially in densely populated countries like the Philippines. With the
rapid growth of commercial buildings and the increasing number of vehicles on the
roads, the demand for parking spaces has surged, leading to congestion and frustration
among drivers. The lack of efficient parking management systems worsens the problem,
resulting in traffic congestion and difficulties for both residents and visitors alike.
In Luzon, the nation's most populous island, metropolitan areas like Metro
Manila bear the stress of parking challenges, with crowded streets and limited parking
facilities causing headaches for commuters and residents alike (Boquet, 2013).
Meanwhile, in Visayas, growing cities such as Cebu City struggle with similar
challenges, as the influx of vehicles outpaces the expansion of parking infrastructure,
leading to traffic congestion (CDN Team, 2018). Even in the southern reaches of
Mindanao, cities like Davao struggle to accommodate the growing number of vehicles
on their roads, with parking scarcity hindering economic growth and urban
development (Lagumbay et al, 2018).
To address these challenges, we present "ParkEase: Wireless Smart Parking
Management Prototype," a solution designed to smoothen the parking experience in
Balanga City and similar urban environments. By manipulating wireless sensors and
advanced communication protocols, ParkEase enables real-time monitoring of parking
space occupancy in a building, allowing drivers to quickly locate available parking
spots. Through mobile applications and electronic signage, drivers are provided with
up-to-date information on parking availability, reducing traffic congestion and
improving overall parking efficiency. Moreover, ParkEase contributes to the reduction
of vehicle emissions and fuel consumption by minimizing the time spent searching for
parking, thereby promoting environmental sustainability and enhancing the quality of
urban life.
In addition to easing parking distress, ParkEase also addresses safety concerns
associated with traditional parking systems. In crowded urban areas like Balanga City,
parking in poorly lit or isolated areas poses risks to vehicle security and personal safety.
With ParkEase, drivers can access information on parking spaces located in well-lit and
secure areas, enhancing overall safety and providing peace of mind to drivers. By
effectively managing parking spaces and ensuring compliance with parking
regulations, ParkEase contributes to the orderly and safe flow of traffic in urban
environments.
i. Objectives
Develop a system capable of accurately detecting and updating the availability
status of parking spaces in real-time using wireless sensors.
Implement efficient communication protocols to transmit parking availability
information from the sensor network to a centralized management system and to
drivers via website or electronic signage.
Design the prototype system to be scalable and adaptable, allowing for easy
integration with existing parking facilities and the ability to accommodate future
expansions or modifications.
