COPING MECHANISMS TO ACADEMIC STRESS OF SENIOR HIGH STUDENTS IN

SAINT FRANCIS COLLEGE

NIKKI V. FABRA

HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES

2024
Context

Coping mechanisms are the techniques people frequently

employ to help manage uncomfortable or challenging emotions when

faced with stress and/or trauma. People who use coping methods

can keep their mental health while adjusting to challenging

situations. One of the main factors contributing to stress,

anxiety, and depression in senior high school students is

academic stress. It is extremely typical and can occasionally

become very overwhelming. The secret to handling it is knowing

what has to be done and overcoming each obstacle. While many

senior high school students at Saint Francis College have coping

techniques for handling stress, some of them are harmful. It may

have an impact on their relationships with their peers as well as

their mental health. According to the researcher's analysis,

having toxic coping methods for academic stress can make it worse

and increase the risk of burnout.

Rationale

The study is conducted due to the following reasons:

1. To Identify Effective Strategies and Determine which coping

strategies are most effective in reducing academic stress.

2. To Address Mental Health Concerns among senior high school

students.
3. It can contribute to academic literature.

Objectives

The researcher aims at accomplishing the following:

1. To explore and identify the various coping mechanisms

employed by students to manage academic stress.

2. To evaluate the psychological impact of different coping

mechanisms on students' mental health, academic

performance, and overall well-being.

3. To examine how the academic environment, including

workload, academic expectations, and support systems,

influences the selection and utilization of coping

strategies.

4. To assess the effectiveness of different coping

strategies in alleviating academic stress and promoting

well-being among students.

5. To inform the development of targeted interventions and

support services aimed at enhancing students' coping

skills and resilience to academic stress.

Beneficiaries and Significance

The beneficiaries of this study are the senior high students

in Saint Francis College, the benefits can be taken off by

educators and administrators at the school, parents or guardians

of the students, and potentially other researchers or

professionals interested in mental health and education. These

are the following importance:

1. Student Well-being: Understanding effective coping

mechanisms can directly improve the mental health and well-

being of senior high students, fostering resilience and

reducing the negative impacts of stress on their academic

performance and overall quality of life.

2. Educational Outcomes: Identifying effective coping

strategies can enhance students' ability to manage academic

stressors, leading to improved academic outcomes such as

better grades, higher retention rates, and increased

satisfaction with their educational experience.

3. Contribution to Literature: By adding to the body of

research on coping mechanisms for academic stress,

particularly among senior high students in a specific

educational context, the study can contribute valuable

insights to the broader academic community and inform

future research in this area.

4. Educational Practices: The research findings can inform the

development of targeted interventions and support services

within the college to better address the specific needs of

senior high students in managing academic stress,

potentially leading to the implementation of more effective

policies and programs.

5. Parental and Institutional Support: The research can also

raise awareness among parents, guardians, and college

administrators about the importance of providing adequate

support and resources for students to cope with academic

stress, fostering a more supportive and conducive learning

environment.

Feasibility Requirements

Feasibility requirements for researching coping mechanisms

to academic stress among senior high school students in a school

could include factors such as:

- Access to participants: Ensuring there's a sufficient number of

willing participants within the school.

- Ethical considerations: Obtaining consent from both students

and guardians, ensuring privacy, and maintaining confidentiality.

- Resources: Sufficient time, personnel, and funding to carry out

the research effectively.

- Research design: Choosing appropriate methodologies and tools

for data collection and analysis.

- Support from school administration: Collaboration and support

from school officials for access and assistance.

- Feasibility of implementation: Ensuring that proposed coping

mechanisms are practical and can be implemented within the school

context.

- Timelines: Establishing realistic timelines for data

collection, analysis, and reporting.

- Potential challenges: Identifying and addressing potential

obstacles or limitations that may arise during the research

process.
Expected Results:

1. Identify a range of coping strategies that students employ

to deal with academic stress, including both adaptive and

maladaptive methods.

2. Determine which coping strategies are most effective in

reducing academic stress and promoting well-being among

senior high students at the school.

3. Impact in academic performance between specific coping

mechanisms and academic outcomes, such as grades,

attendance, and engagement in academic activities.
