Given are the Math 10 grades of randomly selected 14 students:

Find Q1

Solution:

Step 1 Arrange the data in ascending order


80 , 81 , 81 , 83 , 84 , 85 , 86 , 87 , 89 , 89 , 90 , 91 , 92 , 93

Step 2 Find the position using the formula Q1 = (N + 1)

Position of Q1 is 3.75 after of 3rd element (81) but before the 4th element (83).

Step 3 Subtract the 4th element and the 3rd element


83 - 81 = 2
Step 4 Multiply the result of step 3 and the decimal part .75
( 2 ) ( .75) = 1 . 5
Step 5 Add the result to the smaller value or 3rd element (81)
81 + 1.5 = 82 . 5

So , Q1 = 82 .5
Interpretation:
Twenty five percent (25%) of the students have a grade of less than or equal
to 82.5
