INTRODUCTION TO

SOUND
WE ARE LIVING
IN A WORLD OF
SOUND
WHAT IS SOUND?

• Sound is a form of
energy.

• Produced when air

molecules vibrate and
move in pattern known
as waves or sound
waves.
MUSICAL NOTE VS NOISE
Alexander
Graham Bell

• Born on March
3, 1847, in
Edinburgh
Scotland.

• He filed a
patent for
describing
sounds in 1876

• The inventor of
the telephone
THREE BASIC
CHARACTERISTICS OF SOUNDS
• PITCH – Dependent upon the frequency of
the waves.
• INTENSITY – Depends on the amplitude of
the waves, and the quality on the form of the
waves.
• TONE – Is pleasant to the ear if these three
characteristics are properly combined.
Otherwise, the quality turb into noise.
SOUND AND
TEMPERATURE
• At high temperature, the
molecules exhibit high motion
of the molecules that means
the molecules have high kinetic
energy.
• Due to high motion the
molecule vibrates faster which
makes the sound wave to travel
faster.

• Air molecules move at a slower

pace when the temperature is
cold,
Giovanni • An Italian doctor.
• Who demonstrated in 1740 that:
Ludovico • When temperature increases, the
Bianconi speed of sound also increases.
