Britain is now a highly industrialized country and there are only 238,000 farms in the UK. More
and more farmers leave the land because they cannot earn enough money to survive. Only large
farms are economic and because of this, most British farms are big. They usually grow cereals in
the east of England and raise sheep and cows in the north of England and Scotland. The small
family farms often have to earn more money by offering bed and breakfast accommodation to
tourists.
Farming methods in Britain have also changed. Fields used to be quite small, divided by hedges
which were sometimes a thousand years old and full of wild flowers and birds. Many hedges
were pulled up to allow farmers to use modern machinery. Now most fields in England are large
by European standards.

the sun was warm enough, they went swimming then they lay down on the sand and took a
sunbath. There were a lot of people who came there for their holidays. When they were thirsty,
they went to a small restaurant near the beach to buy some coconuts to drink. At lunch and
dinner time, Lan’s uncle cooked a lot of seafood for them. The food was fresh and really delicious.

Along with jogging and swimming, cycling is one of the best all-round forms of exercise. It can
help to increase your strength and energy, giving you more efficient muscles and a stronger heart.
But increasing your strength is not the only advantage of cycling. Because you’re not carrying the
weight of your body on your feet, it’s a good form of exercise for people with painful feet or backs.
However, with all forms of exercise it’s important to start slowly and build up gently. Doing too
much too quickly can damage muscles that aren’t used to working. If you have any doubts about
taking up cycling for health reasons, talk to your doctor and ask for his/her advice.
Ideally you should be cycling at least two or three times a week. For the exercise to be doing
you good, you should get a little out of breath. Don’t worry that if you begin to lose your breath, it
could be dangerous and there must be something wrong with your heart. This is simply not true;
shortness of breath shows that the exercise is having the right effect. However, if you find you are
in pain then you should stop and take a rest. (Created by : Tran Truong Thanh (Zalo 0369904425))

If you are invited to an American friend’s home for dinner, remember these general rules for
polite behavior. First of all, arrive approximately on time, but not early. Americans expect
promptness. It will be all right to be 10 or 15 minutes late but not 45 minutes late. Dinner might
be over-cooked and ruined by then. When you are invited to someone’s home for a meal, it’s
polite to bring a small gift. Flowers or candy are always appropriate. If you have an attractive
thing made in your native country, your host or hostess will certainly enjoy receiving that gift.
What will you do if you are served some food that you cannot eat or you do not like? Do not
make a fuss about it. Simply eat what you can and hope that no one notices it. Be sure to
compliment the cook on the food that you are enjoying. Do not leave immediately after dinner,
but do not overstay your welcome, either. The next day, call or write a thank-you note to stay

My aunt is one of those people who can talk to anyone about anything. If she goes to a party
where she doesn't know any of the people, she just walks up to the first person that she sees and
introduces herself. And yet she doesn't seem to talk about deeply important things like politics or
religion. She always starts off on something very obvious like the other person's job. Very soon
she's talking as if she's known the other person for years. I asked her once what her secret was.
She said that the most important thing in a conversation was listening. People love to talk about
themselves, so if you allow them to do so, it's very easy to keep a conversation going. You have to
listen very carefully and ask questions. And you have to look interested, too. So don't keep
looking at other things in the room while you're talking to someone.

35
Another thing that I've noticed is that she only pays people compliments. She says: “I like your
hair. Which hairdresser do you go to?” or “You look very well. Have you been on holiday?”
Friendly messages like this seem to provide an easy way into a conversation.
31. According to the writer, the most important thing in a conversation was__________.

B. asks people to introduces themselves to her
C. comes over to the first person and introduces herself
D. sits alone and avoids talking to other people
33. The writer’s aunt thinks that it's very easy to keep a conversation going if you__________.
A. let people talk about themselves B. let people hear about yourself
C. talk about politics or religion D. ask people about their secrets
34. What should you NOT do when you have a conversation with someone?
A. Looking very interested in his or her story (Created by : Tran Truong Thanh (Zalo
0369904425))
B. Looking at other things in the room
C. Listening very carefully and asking questions
D. Paying him or her compliments

were strict dress codes. Ordinary people were not allowed to wear clothes with dyes rather than
black, brown or white. Costumes in yellow were reserved for the King. Those in purple and red
were reserved for high ranking court officials, while dresses in blue were exclusively worn by
petty court officials. Men's dress has gradually changed along with social development.
The traditional set of a long gown and turban gave way to modern-looking suits while
business shirts and trousers have replaced traditional long sleeved shirts and wide trousers.
Traditional costumes still exist and efforts are increasingly being made to restore traditional
festivals and entertainment which incorporate traditional costumes.
For women, the outer garment is a special silk gown called an "ao tu than" which is brown or
light brown in colour with four slits divided equally on its lower section. The second layer is a
pink gown. When a woman wears her three gowns, she fastens the buttons on the side, and leave
those on the chest unfastened so that it forms a shaped collar. This allows her to show the different
colors on the upper part of the three gowns. Today, on formal occasions women wear "aodai".

English is one of the most popular languages in the world. It comes second in the number of
speakers after Chinese. In Vietnam, more and more people are studying English and they consider
it a key to success. However, not everyone knows how to learn English effectively.
The best way to improve the four skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing is to practice
regularly. You should make use of every opportunity to speak English with friends in class or at
English speaking clubs or with ourselves in front of the mirror. Learning by heart all the words
does not help much if you do not read a lot because you will easily forget what you have learnt.
Reading books, listening to the radio and watching films are better ways to memorize words.

Two of the most dangerous storms which affect America are hurricanes and tornadoes. They
are very much feared by anyone who may live in the path of their destruction.
Every year homes are destroyed by their fury and often lives are lost. Most people who live
near the coast are forced to evacuate their homes and to move to safer areas until the storm passes.
Floods are caused along the coasts by both the heavy rain and a storm tide that is considerably
above normal water level. The high winds, coastal flooding and heavy rains associated with a
hurricane cause enormous damage.
Hurricanes usually develop between July and October. Once they hit land they carry
tremendous power with driving rain and wind.
Tornadoes are violent low - pressured storms. These storms occur most often during the
summer months and are noticeable by their strong wind and lack of rain. The sky turns black as
dust is sucked up into the air. Tornadoes are capable of lifting quite heavy objects from the
ground. They can pick up trees and cars right into the air and even uplift heavier objects such as
homes and railway cars.
Both hurricanes and tornadoes cause millions of dollars worth of damage to life and property
every year. Today they can be predicted more easily than in the past, but they cannot be stopped
or ignored.

Pollution can be seen not only throughout the world, but also in our own homes. It comes from
household chemicals, the amount of water people use and the waste people produce and throw
away. What can be done to stop this pollution? Surprisingly, a person can help save the
environment by doing simple things.
First, we need to recycle, which allows products to be used over and over again. Recycling can
also reduce the number of trees cut down to produce paper products. It takes very little effort. It is
not hard to place plastic and glass bottles, aluminum cans and paper in a bin. Anyone can do it.
Second, we need to watch the amount of water used in the home. It can be conserved by taking
short showers instead of baths, repairing leaky faucets, using the dishwasher or washing machine
only when fully loaded, or simply turning the faucet off while brushing your teeth.
Third, we need to reduce waste. We need to recycle whenever possible, but should also try to
use this waste effectively. For example, grass clippings and food scraps can be made into compost
for plants. The average person produces 4.3 pounds of waste every day, but we can reduce that
amount by recycling and reusing. (Created by : Tran Truong Thanh (Zalo 0369904425))
