MALAWEG ETHNIC GROUP

The Malaweg are located in sections of Cagayan Valley and Kalinga-Apayao provinces and in the town
of Rizal. Their main crops are lowland rice and corn. Tobacco was raised as a cash crop on a foothill west
of Piat on the Matalag river near the southeast border of Kalinga-Apayao province, drawing Ibanags from
the east. Malaueg, or Malaweg, is a spoken dialect by a group of people living in the northern part of the
Philippines. The Spanish influence is very prominent in the Malaueg dialect which consists of old
Spanish (Castilian) nouns and verbs. Malaueg is a mostly spoken in the Northern Cordillera Mountain
Range region and some in the Province of Cagayan, with the majority in the town of Rizal. Ninety-eight
percent of the people living in Rizal are Malaueg-speaking thus, the town is known as "The Premier
Town of Malaueg". A popular word-of-mouth history claims that "malaueg" was coined after a thirsty
Spanish friar asked a native where the water he drank (that made him sick) was from. The native uttered
the word "ueg" which supposedly meant "fresh water"

MALAWEG BELIEFS AND TRADITIONS

The town was called Malaueg when the Spaniards colonized the Philippines. They said that the Spaniards
became thirsty because of the unbearable heat of the sun and the mountainous terrain. Then one of the
Malaueg people gave some water to them. The Friar asked where the water came from and the man who
gave the water uttered the word “ueg” which means fresh water. Then this Friar had expirienced
stomachache that led him saying “malo” which means bad and then it finally combined and called as
“Malo-ueg” that means bad brook. Our traditions, practices, customs and beliefs are preserved and
developed. Here are some of the practices of the Malaueg people. First, is the “Sinabalu Festival” wherein
people of Rizal celebrate this during the month of April to show the tradition and to showcase the
usefulness of bamboos. In which the rice cake is placed and cooked. It’s a typical festival, wherein you
can watch streetdance competitions, pageants and etc. There’s also a competition where people in Rizal
contest their skills in cooking “Sinabalu“. Sinabalu, that’s they call their rice cake. Until now, we still
celebrate this event and soon the next generation will also give importance, value and still celebrate this
in the future.
