BACKGROUND OF STUDY

 The construction industry is getting more modern, technologies advance

and growing day by day around the global including Nigeria. According to
Sun and Olawale (2010), the construction industry has contributed
towards to the GDP due to continuous development.
 Cracks are signs of structural movement, during and after construction. Such movement occurs
all the time, and usually its magnitude is so small that it passes unnoticed [1]
 Most buildings crack at some time during their service lives. The appearance of cracks is a
symptom of distress within the fabric of the building.
 Often the cracking is of little consequence and once it is established as static, simple repair by
filling or re-pointing is all that is required. However, a crack may be the first sign of a serious
defect which may affect the serviceability or the stability of the building [2]

STATEMENT OF RESEARCH PROBLEM

 Construction deficiencies such as unqualified professionals, poor

workmanship and low quality of materials, design deficiencies and faulty
design, limited time and cost, external environment etc. lead to various
types of cracks in buildings.
 Rarely does a building collapse soon after the appearance of a crack, even if the crack is large,
nevertheless, it is important to note this in order to prevent any undesired loss of life or
property
 In essence, this study will provide an in depth knowledge on causes, effects and types of cracks
and proffer the appropriate prevention and remedial measures in other to eliminate the
incessant occurrence of building collaspes.

STATEMENT OF RESEARCH QUESTIONS

In this study answers will be sort for the following question listed below;
1. What are cracks in building construction?
2. What are the causes crack defects on building constrctuion?
3. What are the effects and implication of crack defects in building construction?
4. What are the preventive measures undertaken to avoid/reduce the incessant occurrence of
crack defects in buildings?
5. How can the cracks defects in the building construction be repaired?

HYPHOTHESIS
OBJECTIVES
The objectives of this research is as follows are as follows:
 To establish the unique features of building projects (new buildings, renovation projects
or turn keys)
 To investigate the causes of crack defects in building structures
 To give recommendations on the prevention of cracks in building
 To provide remedial measures and techniques for cracks repair in building structures

SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF STUDY

This research mainly focuses on the causes, types and solutions of crack defects
in buildings. Qualitative method which is interview will be used to collect the
data from the interviewees. The limitation of this research is limited of time.
Therefore, the interview can only be carried out at some selected buildings
located in Akure south local government area of Ondo state, Nigeria.
