Research on causes, types and effects

about building failure in Addis Ababa

Ethiopia.
1.Introduction
Building failures have many problems, including
 loss of life.
 damage to infrastructures
 cases economic problems.
Background of Study
• Buildings are structures constructed by man and for something.
They must be good plan, structural design, and installed to obtain
desired satisfaction from the environment. The industries of building
construction are constantly changing with the introduction of new
construction materials and techniques and new technologies of
construction. Several codes of practice universally accepted are
available for the design and construction of buildings and these codes
are important to construction industries.
Background of Study

• the codes serve at least four distinct functions:

Ensure adequate structural safety by specifying certain essential
minimum requirements for design.
Render the task of the designer relatively simple.
Ensure a measure of consistency among different designers.
Have some legal validity.
• Ethiopia is currently in the intermediary phase of development and
industrialization whereby many construction projects are being
developed. Many projects have been constructed such as commercial
buildings, public buildings, residential buildings, and industrial
buildings. The project of public buildings includes educational
buildings, hospital buildings, and government buildings. The literature
has been critically reviewed from a variety of sources such as books,
the Internet, journals, articles, and unpublished thesis.
• a visual inspection was carried out on the public building project in
Addis Ababa city to determine their current building condition. The
building defects found were recorded and the data were collected for
data analysis. After that, the researcher concluded the findings and
provided recommendations to rectify the problems. Therefore, this
research focuses on investigating different types of building defects in
general and the causes & effects of building defects in particular and
finally providing procedures that can reduce their occurrence.
Objectives of Study

• To know the types and effects of building failures in construction

projects.
• To assess the causes of building failures in building construction
projects.
• To know the possible prevention and repair of failure in building
construction projects.
Research Questions
• What are the types and effects of building failure in construction
projects?
• What are the causes of building failures in building construction
projects?
• What are the possible prevention and repairs of building failures in
building construction Projects?
Significance of Study
• study will be important for civil and construction studentson how they
can effectively manage building projects, design the structure, and
use materials.
• The study is also important to give information on types of building
failures, causes of building failures, effects of failures on buildings,
and possible prevention.
• The study also will be of benefit to constructors on the choice of
project materials to be used for building projects.
.Scope and Limitations of Study
• The study is on the assessment of causes, effects, and repairs of
failures in building projects in Addis Ababa city. The study will make
use of selected construction firms in Addis Ababa city. The study will
involve randomly selected construction firms in Addis Ababa city.
• case study in building failure is along time duration study but in this
research use short period not more than 3 weeks.
LITERATURE REVIEW
• he failure can be divided into two categories, which are
Structural failure- Structural failure means any failure in a structural
element of a building like beams, colmun and foundations.
Non-structural failure: failure in none structural partes like walls, floor
finish,electrical installition.
causes of construction failures
Improper design,
Poor workmanship that leads to poor finishing quality,
 Improper means or methods of installation,
Improper or poor quality of the materials,
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
• A case study design approach was adopted for this research to
investigate the study on causes, effects, and remedial measures of
building defects as applied in public buildings.
Visual Inspection
Documentation and Records
Expert Opinion
Conclusion
Conclusion
• Building failures have many problems, including loss of life, damage to
infrastructures and services, and economic problems. Understanding
the causes of building failures is important for improving the
construction process, the safety of people, and preventing future
problems.
• A high level of knowledge is needed in designing and constructing
buildings, as competence, and craftsmanship from the team, which
includes the Architectural designer, the Engineers or Contractor
(Structural designer, Mechanical and Electrical designer), and the Local
Authority.
