Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, dear learners, can
continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions,
exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.
Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-step
as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.
Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each SLM.
This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if you need to
ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of the
lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer the post-test to self-check
your learning. Answer keys are provided for each activity and test. We trust that
you will be honest in using these.
In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teachers are also provided
to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they can best
help you on your home-based learning.
Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part of
this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercise and tests. Read
the instructions carefully before performing each task.
If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the tasks
in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.
Thank you.
What I Need to Know
This module will help you understand and utilize appropriate grammatical
signals or expressions suitable to the different patterns of idea development.
These signal words and expressions will guide you in writing cohesive and
coherent paragraphs. This module contains a variety of activities that will help
you achieve the target skills.
At the end of this module, you are expected to:
• differentiate general and particular statements, claims and

be used for claims, counterclaims, reasons and evidence.
To show evidence from other resources, you may use the following transitions:
Take this excerpt from an article as an example. Notice how the author effectively
used grammatical signals to express claims and counterclaims about the topic.
The more fried chicken, fish, and potatoes you eat, the more likely you are to
develop serious heart disease in the long term. That’s according to a new scientific
investigation, based on a meta-analysis of nearly 20 studies showing that fried foods are
associated with an increased risk of heart disease and stroke.
It’s often believed that certain foods, even though they are considered harmful to
health, are safe when eaten in moderation. But a new study warns of the harmful effects
of fried foods on the heart and arteries, even in small portions. However, the study does
have some limitations, as the researchers themselves point out. For example, the
mechanism behind the impact of these foods on the development of cardiovascular
disease is not entirely clear, though there are some hypotheses.
