Until last year, I managed a gallery-cafe in Harajuku called MOGRA.
I remember it as a special place with its own unique character at which
strange people gathered.

The first person to exhibit there decorated the shop for its unforgettable
opening: a modern artist and filmmaker called Harima-san.
At the screening of the film he made during his days as an exchange student
in America, called "Bra America," he displayed something that may have
given you a shock on first seeing it, but it actually turned out to be a
really good joke.

It was a pure white, giant bra that was over five meters in total length.

Harima-san had made it himself over however many days or weeks. There was
the hugely comical spectacle of the huge bra hanging from the ceiling,
while underneath it the audience watched the film. However, the film was
brilliant, and after the screening the thunderous applause confirmed its
huge success.

The film was about a young man who gets caught up in a secret occult
society. Not long afterward, this film was chosen to be shown as the
Japanese representative in the Indie Movie category at a JETRO organization
event in America.

There are times when no one can imagine what stimulus and what timing will
kick off a process, but the most important thing is to work with the
artist's strength of purpose. If you don't, then nothing will come to
fruition.

I think there's no doubt that Harima-san himself poured a lot of passion

into his project. That surging creative urge exists on a different vector
from hardheaded business sense: it closely resembles in origin the
curiosity felt when we're children, and for us is possibly a very important
source of our energy.
