the total solar
eclipse, I went
off to the best
place for it

Yakushima is an island that is situated in the southern part of Kyushu, and

will I think be well known to many as one of three of Japan's great world
natural heritage sites (the other two being Shiretoko and Shirakami
Sanchi), or alternatively as the setting for the Miyazaki animated film
"Princess Mononoke".

To go ahead and give away the ending, unfortunately, as everyone already

knows, due to thick clouds, this time the eclipse couldn't be seen at all.

However, before your very eyes and as far as the eye could see, everything
fell into darkness, and in that instant, with the reaction of the agitated
birds and insects, I was filled with a kind of almost supernatural feeling.

5 Taking the above as an introduction, today's main theme is "Yakushima

Today."
Due perhaps to the influence of the recent popularity of the concepts of
"healing," "ecology," and "spirituality," Yakushima has become the
undisputed destination point for these things and at the present time is
well on its way to becoming a sacred place for hippies all over the world.

Particularly numerous during the time of the solar eclipse, there exists on
the island a great number of places that resemble hippy communes.

Given that those places have no cell-phone reception, water, gas, or

electricity supply (they do bring in batteries and portable gas stoves,
etc., however), the day-in-day-out existence of the people who gather there
is mutual cooperation, as they do things like eat together in a circle,
talk together, and sing together. It's completely as if all the people
there are a family who have lived there forever. There are absolutely no
luxuries.

What there is, however, is the sky full of stars stretching out above you,
