01 Introduction
What is an appliance?

• An appliance is a piece of equipment or a device designed to

perform a particular job.
01 Introduction
What is an appliance?
• Appliances can be sorted into electrical appliances & non-
electrical appliances.
• Electrical appliances can be further sorted into battery-powered
& mains powered.

Mains-Powered Battery-Powered

Items that run on

mains electricity are To make battery-powered
plugged into a items run, you need to
socket. insert a battery
into them.
02 Volt
A volt is the unit used to measure the strength of
electricity.
Voltage is the strength of supply of
electricity.

Cells with a voltage of 1.5 V or 3 V

are safe to use.
Pylons
Pylon is the structure that carries cables from the
power station where the electricity is made or
generated to cities , towns & villages..

The voltage of electricity carried by

these cables is many thousands of
volts!.
03 Mains electricity
Mains electricity: High voltage electricity that is sent to homes, schools ,
factories & offices to provide power for machines , lighting and
appliances.
03 Mains electricity
At these high voltages, safety is
very important .
The parts of an appliance that you
touch must be made from
insulating material .
The parts inside the appliance are
made from conducting material so
that electricity can pass through.
04 Materials used in electrical
appliances.
• Metals such as copper , iron & steel are good
electrical conductors.
• That’s why the parts of electrical appliances
that let electricity pass through are made of
metal .

For example, metal is used for the pin in a plug .

The pins allow electricity to travel from the wall socket , through the plug ,
And into an appliance as the kettle or television.

-
04 Materials used in electrical
appliances.
• When we handle the plug , we only touch
the cover. This is made up of plastic which
is a good insulator.

• Never touch a bare

electric wire , especially
if your fingers are
damp or sweaty.

-
04 Materials used in electrical
appliances
• Plug is a device for connecting
an electric wire or cable to an
electricity supply.
• Wall socket is a hole in the wall
connecting the plug on an
appliance with the electric
cables in the wall.
• Cable is a rope of wires.
05 Electric shock
Electric shock : is the effect of a sudden flow of electricity through a
person’s body .
A person’s heart can be badly affected & the person can have a heart
attack and die.

Quiz:
Look at the picture of Mrs Mbatha at the
kitchen sink.
Why should Mrs Mbatha dry her hands
before she handles the toaster.

• Tap water conducts electricity. If she touches

the bare wire inside the toaster with wet
hands she could get an electric shock.
Quiz:

How is this appliance powered?
