LEARNING CONTENT
COMMON ELECTRICAL SYMBOLS

Electrical symbols are a small drawings or pictograms used to represent various electrical devices in
a diagram or plan of an electrical circuit.

Electrical Terms Description Electrical Symbols

Ammeter an instrument used to measure
electric current in Amperes.

Antenna an interface of radio

communication’s electromagnetic
signals sent and received from
different location.

Battery consisting of one or more cells in

which chemical energy is
converted into electricity and
used as a source of power
Bell a mechanical or electronic bell
that produces a ringing sound
Capacitor a passive electronic component
which has the ability to store
electrical charges for a short
period of time

Cell an individual compartment in a

battery that stores electric charge

Circuit Breaker an automatic device for stopping

the flow of current in an electric
circuit as a safety measure

Conductor/Wire a material that allows the flow of

electric current

Connected wires a wires or conductors which are

connected by means of splicing
or by using wire connectors

Diode an electronic component with two

terminals , typically allows the
flow of current in one direction

Duplex convenience outlet an electrical fixture which the

or Common outlet plug of appliances is inserted

Floor outlet a common or special outlets

which are mounted in floors
Fluorescent lamp a tubular lamp that produces
bright light with lower power
consumption than incandescent
lamp
Fuse a safety device that blows when
there is an over current to prevent
further damage in the circuit.

Galvanometer an instrument for detecting and

measuring small amount of
electric currents milli and micro
Amperes.
Ground a reference point in an electrical
circuit which voltage are
measured. It also refers to
electrical circuits which are
connected to earth for several
reasons.
Incandescent lamp a lamp or bulb consist of a
tungsten filament which when
connected to a source of
electricity and heated, produces
light
Kilowatt-hour meter a device common in our houses
that measures the electric power
we consumed from electricity
provider

Lightning Arrester a device that protects the

electrical circuit from the surge of
current due to lightning.

Lighting panel board an electric panel which contains

safety breakers that protects only
the electrical lighting fixtures
Male plug an electrical material which is
used to connect from the outlet as
a source with wire conductor to
the load
Power panel board serves as the distributor of
electricity in our households from
the power source.
Push button switch a switch usually used to close , or
switch-on a circuit momentarily
when pressed.
Range outlet a type of outlet which is used in
high power need appliances such
electric ovens and electric motors

Resistor a device that resist the passage of

electric current

Service entrance (3 wires) a wires that serves as the interface

from the electric service provider
to our household
Single pole switch an electrical switch that has only
one blade or contact
Special purpose outlet a special type of outlets used for
certain appliances and tools.

Switch an electrical fixture that close and

opens the circuit

Speaker a device used in audio systems

which convert electrical signals
into sound.
Terminal a point of connection for closing
an electric circuit

Voltmeter an instrument used to measure

electric potential in Volts
Wattmeter an instrument for measuring
the electric power in Watts

Weatherproof outlet A type of outlet that are

mostly used in outdoors

Wires not connected a symbol that two or more

wires were not physically
connected.

Two Gang switch an electrical switch that has S2

two blade or contact
Three Gang Switch an electrical switch that has S3
three blade or contact

PERFORMANCE TASK
