Obtain a sample of 20 students chosen randomly from a group of 50 students and determine whether
they are left-handed or not. The experiment had repeated 10 times on the same group. The findings
recorded as follow:

Does the experiment satisfy a binomial distribution? Justify your answer.

Find the mean, mode and median of the left-handed proportion. State, with a reason, the left-handed
proportion.
It is found that Mode < Mean,

The distribution is positively skewed. The median will choose as is often the best measure of central
tendency.

Median is more appropriates measure.

Hence, the proportion of left-handed is 0.200.

Based on the proportion of left-handed in part (b), for a sample of 30 students, find the probability
(i) exactly 5 are left-handed
(ii) less than 10 are left-handed
(iii) between 4 and 10 are left-handed
State the conditions under which a binomial distribution can be approximated by a normal
distribution. Is the experiment in part 1 applicable in this case? Give your reason.

Calculate the following probabilities for X∼B(300, 0.40) using normal approximation.
(a) P(X ≥ 136)
(b) P(99 < X ≤ 125)
(c) P(X >155)
(d) P(X < 100)
(e) P(X =110)

With computer software available, it is not necessary to use the normal approximation to
the binomial distribution. By using any statistical software for binomial distribution,
recalculate the probabilities in part 3.

NORMAL DISTRIBUTION
P( X ≥ 135)=1−P (X <135.5)
¿ 1−NORM . DIST (135.5 , 120 , D 8 , TRUE)

BINOMIAL DISTRIBUTION
P ( X ≥135 )= . . RANGE ( 300 , 0.4 ,135,300 ) P( X=110)= . (110,300 ,0.4 , FALSE )
