Introduction

The purpose of this assignment is to enhance the understanding of the concept of domain dan
range of a function. A function means a defined relationship between an independent variable (x)
and a dependent variable (y).

The domain of a function is the set of all the possible inputs of the function. For example, the
3
domain of f ( x )=3 x 2 +4 is all real numbers, and the domain of g ( x )= is all real numbers except
x
for x=0 . Besides that, the range of a function shows to all the possible values of y. Moreover, it
is only a function if every x value correspond to only one y value.

An inverse function is defined as a function which can reverse into another function. For
example, function f (x) to y , then inverse of function f ( y ) to x . If the function is denoted by
f (x) or F (x) , then the inverse function is denoted by f −1 ( x ) or F−1 ( x ). One should not confuse
(−1) with exponent or reciprocal here. The inverse function returns the original value for which
a function gave the output.

For example, f ( x )=3 x +5

−1
f ( x )= y

x−5
y=
3

x−5
∴ f −1 ( x )=
3

−1 x−5
 The inverse function for f ( x )=3 x +5 is f ( x )= .
3
 The domain and range of f −1 ( x ) is all real numbers.

Besides inverse function, a composite function is a function that depends on another function.
A composite function is when one function is substituted into another function. For example,
f [g ( x ) ] is the composite function that is formed when g(x ) is substituted in x for f (x). f [ g ( x ) ] is
read as f of g of x . f [g ( x ) ] can also be written as f ° g(x ) or fg( x). In the composite function of
f ° g ( x ), the domain of f becomes g(x ).

For example, Given f ( x )=3 x +6∧g ( x )=x+ 9

f [ g ( x ) ] =f [ x +9 ] g [ f ( x ) ] =g[3 x+ 9]

= 3 ( x+ 9 ) +6 = [ 3 x+6 ] + 9

=3 x+ 27+6 ∴ = 3 x+ 15

∴ = 3 x+ 33

 The composite function for f [ g ( x ) ] is 3 x+ 33 ,and the composite function for g [ f ( x ) ] is

3 x+ 15.
 The domain of composite function for f [ g ( x ) ] and g[ f ( x ) ] are real numbers.
