INTRODUCTION
Context and Rationale
The focus of this action research will be on addressing learning gaps in Science of
Grade 8 students of Tayawan National High School for the school year 2022-2023.
Science is essential in many aspects of our lives. It affects the choices we make every
day. In education, science gives students the chance to understand how and why things work.
It arouses curiosity in students to assist them to comprehend and come up with questions
about the knowledge they have gathered. In addition, it improves students’ critical thinking
abilities as they are able to make connections between theory and practice. Furthermore, it is
an essential part of numerous industries, from high-tech to agricultural, and all in between.
When the Covid-19 pandemic occurred, it greatly impacted almost every aspect of our
lives including the education of the children. Science education and learning were affected in
a way that resulted in many teachers teaching less science, especially when teaching
remotely. Covering the entire curriculum was challenging, particularly the subject of working
educational systems, including broadband access and computers required for online
misalignments of requirements and resources. Students with advantages due to social status,
and parental support, and who have the willingness and capability to learn might navigate
past the school doors to alternate learning opportunities for education. Those with less
favorable backgrounds frequently remained in the dark when their schools closed. (Andrea
and pieces of evidence from assessments, learning gaps, particularly in science were noticed.
Students can hardly connect their previous knowledge about a certain topic.

competencies of Science to address the learning gaps of the grade 8 students in the 3 rd quarter

RESEARCH METHODS
This part of the paper discusses various methodologies that will be used in gathering
data and analysis which are relevant to the research. This includes the participants of the
study, data gathering method, data analysis plan, data collection method, and management.
Participants
This research will make use of a complete enumeration of all 15 Grade 8 students of
Tayawan National High School who have low scores in the pretest administered for the 3 rd
quarter in Science. Focused Group Discussion(FGD) will be done between the teacher and
determine the prior knowledge of the participants in science. A parallel post-test will be given
Data Analysis
This study will use descriptive statistics such as mean score, standard deviation, and
mode of determining whether the learning gaps were addressed by showing improvements in
the student’s academic performances. All data will be treated through Microsoft Excel.
Ethical Consideration
The ethical considerations that were upheld during the conduct of this action research
are presented in this section. The participants will be given an informed consent form and
will be asked to voluntarily be involved in the study considering all their rights of withdrawal
and refusal. There will be no data which will exhibit participants’ direct identity such as
Informed Consent
The respondents/participants will be made aware that their involvement in this study
is voluntary and that they were not required to do so should they believe against their interest.
Additionally, the participants will be made aware that the study was carried out solely for
academic purposes and that the information they provide will only be used for those
purposes.
Confidentiality Pledge
The researcher ensured that the information which will be collected about the
respondents'/participants' personal details would be kept confidential and would not, under
any circumstance, be made public. This can be guaranteed by the following activities: name
of the respondents will be replaced by codes, sheet containing the name of the respondents
will be removed and be kept or destroyed when no longer needed for the research, the
researchers will have the sole access to the code’s master list, and files containing research
data will be password protected and will be encrypted to keep the data safe.

Dr. Bongcawil,
Greetings!
The undersigned will be conducting an action / basic research study with the title
“ADDRESSING LEARNING GAPS IN SCIENCE OF 15 GRADE 8 STUDENTS OF
TAYAWAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL DUE TO COVID-19 IN THE 3RD
QUARTER OF THE SCHOOLYEAR 2022-2023” to address the learning gaps in
Tayawan National High School.
In this regard, the researcher would like to ask approval from your good office to conduct the
study in Tayawan National High School in the Division of Bayawan City. Rest assured that
the documents taken from the respondents and school will be kept confidential.
I am looking forward for a favorable approval on this matter.
