What you’ll need:
• SL ST: Slip Stitch - insert hook, pull up loop and through 1st loop
on hook.
• SC: Single Crochet - insert hook into stitch, YO & pull up a loop,
pull through both loops on hook.
• HDC: Half-Double Crochet - YO, insert hook into stitch, YO & pull
up a loop, YO, pull through all 3 loops on hook.
• DC: Double Crochet – YO, insert hook into stitch, YO & pull up a
loop, YO, pull through 2 loops twice.
• TC: Triple Crochet – YO twice, insert hook into stitch, YO & pull
up a loop, YO, pull through 2 loops 3 times
Pattern Instructions:
Note: From here on out you will need to pick up back loops. What
this means is when making a HDC you will create your normal top 2
loops, but there will also be one on the back side of the stitch. When
you turn your work that back loop is facing you. I want you to put
your hook under that loop and the top 2 loops. This will make it so
you are working under all 3 loops instead of the normal top 2 (Also
known as picking up the back loop).
Row’s 2-6: HDC2TOG, HDC 1 in each ST across, CH 1, Turn (you will be
left with 5 ST once you’ve completed ROW 6)
I normally cut 38” strands 8 of each color, and put 4 of each color in
each braid.
Fold each color in half; with hook pull 1 color’s folded side through 1
stitch at the bottom of the earflap. Pull second color through the
next stitch, and repeat for last color. When you pull them through
you need to pull half of it all the way through; braid and knot. Trim
the ends so they are all the same length.
Note: These are so much fun because you can make and place
them how you’d like. I have made a pattern for Small and Large
spots. I recommend using only small spots on a size 0-3 month hat.
For anything larger you can change it up a bit. I used 2 Large and 2
Small for size 6-24 months and only covered the front. You are more
than welcome to cover the back as well or put them closer
together. I can’t wait to see what you come up with!
Sew all your spots you have made on to your hat. Like I said before it
is art have fun with it there is not right or wrong way to sew or place
your spots on this hat.

Tie off after RND 8 leaving tail long enough for sewing. Line up 4
RND’s below the “Horns” being sure these are level if not it will be
very noticeable. It makes it easier to find the sides when you lay hat
flat and line up with creases.
Mane:
Using Chocolate
Cut 20 - 5 inch strands
Separate into 4-5 strands bundles this isn’t real science.
Join to the top of the hat around the starting Magic Ring. To do this is
easiest with a hook. Insert your hook where you’d like your tuff of
yarn to be, and fold your bundle of strands in half. With hook grab
the folded end and pull it about half way through. Grab your loose
ends and pull them tightly through your loop. Repeat this till you
have enough hairs.
Separate all your strands. Meaning because you are using 4 ply
worsted weight there are 4 pieces to the strand. Separate all those
strands and trim to desired length.
Booties: Use I hook and Brown
Gauge: (Please check your gauge I crochet tight)
Using “I” hook and HDC with Worsted Weight Yarn
7 stitches to 2 inches
To obtain gauge:
Make a chain a little over 2 inches. Do 1 HDC in 2nd CH from hook
and across. CH 1 turn HDC across until your swatch is a little over an
inch tall. Then count how many stitches you have in 2 inches.
Adjust as needed to obtain my gauge above.
(0-3, 3-6, 6-9, 9-12) Follow size according to ( )
CH (12, 13, 14, 15)
RND 1: 1 HDC in 2nd CH from hook, 1 HDC in next (9, 10, 11, 12) CH’s,
3 HDC’s in last CH, Working on other side of CH, 1 HDC in next (11, 12,
13, 14) CH’s, SL ST to 1st HDC (24, 26, 28, 30) Heel is where you SL ST.
RND 2: CH 1, 2 HDC’s in same ST, 1 HDC in next (9, 10, 11, 12) ST’s, 2
HDC’s in next 5 ST’s, 1 HDC in next (9, 10, 11, 12) ST’s, SL ST to 1st HDC
in back 2 loops only see photo on next page, Change to Butter color
cut and weave in brown tail (30, 32, 34, 36)
At this point you have finished working the bottom of the bootie and
we are now going to transition to the top of the bootie. Please
measure your sole it should measure from toe to heel approximately
3.5 inches for 0-3 months, 4 inches for 3-6 months, 4.5 inches for 6-9
months and 5 inches for 9-12 months. If it does not measure
appropriately that means your gauge is off please go back and
double check your gauge.
RND 3: CH 1, Working in back 2 loops (See photo. You do not want to
work in the front loop this will help turn you in and create a textured
line) 1 HDC in same ST, 1 HDC in next (29, 31, 33, 35) ST’s, SL ST to 1st
HDC (30, 32, 34, 36)
Row 5: Working in back 2 loops only (like you did the sole), 1 HDC in
same ST, 1 HDC in next (15, 17, 19, 21) ST’s, CH 1, turn, (16, 18, 20, 22)
you can now remove your stitch markers
Note: From here on out you will need to all 3 loops. What this means
is when making a HDC you will create your normal top 2 loops, but
there will also be one on the back side of the stitch. When you turn
your work that back loop is facing you. I want you to put your hook
under that loop and the top 2 loops. This will make it so you are
working under all 3 loops instead of the normal top 2 (Also known as
picking up the back loop).
Row 6: 1 HDC in next (4, 5, 6, 7) ST’s, HDC2TOG 4 times, 1 HDC in next
(4, 5, 6, 7) ST’s, CH 1, turn, (12, 14, 16, 18)
Row 7: 1 HDC in next (2, 3, 4, 5) ST’s, HDC2TOG 4 times, 1 HDC in next
(2, 3, 4, 5) ST’s, CH 1, turn, (8, 10, 12, 14)
Stop here for 0-3 months and move to Row 11
Row 8: 1 HDC in next (1, 2, 3) ST’s, HDC2TOG 4 times, 1 HDC in next (1,
2, 3) ST’s, CH 1, turn, (6, 8, 10)
Stop here for 3-6 months and move to Row 12
Stop here for 6-9 months and move to Row 11
Row 9: 1 HDC in next ST, HDC2TOG 4 times, 1 HDC in next ST, CH 1,
turn, (6)
Stop here for 9-12 months and move to Row 12
Row 11: (For 0-3 and 6-9 months only) HDC8TOG, (this is the same as
HDC2TOG except you YO and go through 8 stitches instead of just
the two) Tie off and weave in your tail. Move to Row 13.
Row 12: (For 3-6 and 9-12 months only) HDC6TOG, (this is the same
as HDC2TOG except you YO and go through 6 stitches instead of just
the two) Tie off and weave in your tail. Move to Row 13.
Working on the Heel: You need you make a SL Knot with your Butter
Color and join with a SL ST, CH 1 (Back 2 loops only like sole) to either
stitch next to the 2 stitches you marked with a stitch marker.
Row 13: (Working in Back 2 loops on HDC’s and Back loops on DC’s)
1 HDC in same ST, 1 HDC in next 13 ST’s (14) Tie off weave in your tails
With Brown create a SL knot and join with SL ST, CH 1 to any stitch in
the back of the bootie. 1 SC in same ST and 1 SC in each stitch
around the top of the bootie, SL ST to 1st SC and tie off weaving in
your tails
If you want to add some tassels in the front you just need to cut 3-4, 4
inch strands of brown and join them to the top of the bootie and pull
apart the strands like you did the tuff on the top of the giraffes head.
Diaper Cover: Use K hook and Butter Color

with 1 ST left in the Row, 2 HDC in last ST, CH 1, turn. Repeat this Row 6
more times. At the end of your 6th repeat of the Row you should
have (22, 24, 26, 28) ST’s
Row (32, 34, 36, 38): 1 HDC in next (22, 24, 26, 28) ST’s, CH 1, turn,
Repeat this row 5 more times for a grand total of 6 Rows. Tie off
leaving your tail long enough for sewing up the side.
With tail sew up the side edges of the diaper cover, tie off and
weave in your tails.
