Gauge: (Please check your gauge I crochet tight)

Using “K” hook and HDC with Worsted Weight Yarn
6 stitches to 2 inches
To obtain gauge:
Make a chain a little over 2 inches. Do 1 HDC in 2nd CH from hook
and across. CH 1 turn HDC across until your swatch is a little over an
inch tall. Then count how many stitches you have in 2 inches.
Adjust as needed to obtain my gauge above

Pattern Instructions:

* Repeat *-* till end of RND, SL ST to 1st HDC

Repeat RND 10 until desired length.

Hat Length Guide:

0-3 Months = (6-6.5” length) 3 - 9 months = (6.5-7” length)
9-24 Months = (7” length) 3 years – 10 years = (7.5” length)
Teens = (7.5-8" length) Adult Women = (8" length)
Men = (8-8.5” length)
Ear Flaps: (Optional) if you plan to do these do them in Butter Color
Fold hat in half with knot centered and in the back. Count 5 stitches
toward the front and mark it on both sides.

Row 1. Join with a SL ST to either of your stitch markers, CH 1 (Working

toward the back) 1 HDC in same ST, HDC in next 9 ST’s, CH 1 turn (10)

Note: From here on out you will need to pick up back loops. What
this means is when making a HDC you will create your normal top 2
loops, but there will also be one on the back side of the stitch. When
you turn your work that back loop is facing you. I want you to put
your hook under that loop and the top 2 loops. This will make it so
you are working under all 3 loops instead of the normal top 2 (Also
known as picking up the back loop).
Row’s 2-6: HDC2TOG, HDC 1 in each ST across, CH 1, Turn (you will be
left with 5 ST once you’ve completed ROW 6)

Repeat this process till you have completed Row 6

Tie off and weave in your tails

Join with SL ST and Chocolate Color to the back of the hat, CH 1,

and HDC around. SL ST to 1st HDC and tie off; weave in your tail.

For Braids: (Optional)

I normally cut 38” strands 8 of each color, and put 4 of each color in
each braid.

Fold each color in half; with hook pull 1 color’s folded side through 1
stitch at the bottom of the earflap. Pull second color through the
next stitch, and repeat for last color. When you pull them through
you need to pull half of it all the way through; braid and knot. Trim
the ends so they are all the same length.

If you want to add pom poms to the end of your braids:

Make your 2 pom poms with your pom pom maker or if you don’t
have one here is a video I made on how to make them with
cardboard http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PeqeLmjivo. Leave
tails long enough that you can use them to tie the pom poms on.
To attach them to the braids:
With your hook just above the knot you made in your braid insert
your hook. Draw one of your tails all the way through. Remove your
hook and insert it in the same spot going the opposite way and grab
your 2nd tail bringing it through the braid. You should now have
about 3-4 inches draping on each side of the braid. Tie your tails
together tightly, and trim to the same length as the pom pom.

Spots: Chocolate and K hook

Note: These are so much fun because you can make and place
them how you’d like. I have made a pattern for Small and Large
spots. I recommend using only small spots on a size 0-3 month hat.
For anything larger you can change it up a bit. I used 2 Large and 2
Small for size 6-24 months and only covered the front. You are more
than welcome to cover the back as well or put them closer
together. I can’t wait to see what you come up with!

Small Spots: Chocolate and K hook

Start by making the Magic Ring, CH 2

RND 1. 8 HDC in Ring, Tighten, SL ST to 1st HDC, CH 1

RND 2. 2 HDC in same ST, 2 DC in next ST, 2 TC in next ST, 2 DC in next

ST, 2 SC in next ST, CH 3, 2 TC in next 2 ST, 2 DC in last ST, SL ST to 1st
HDC. Tie Off leaving tail long enough to sew in place.
Large Spots: Chocolate and K hook
Start by making the Magic Ring, CH 2

RND 1. 8 HDC in Ring, Tighten, SL ST to 1st HDC, CH 1

RND 2. 2 HDC in same ST, 2 DC in next ST, 2 TC in next ST, 2 DC in next

ST, 2 SC in next ST, CH 3, 2 TC in next 2 ST, 2 DC in last ST, SL ST to 1st
HDC, CH 3

RND 3. 2 TC in same ST, 2 SC in next ST, 2 HDC in next ST, 2 TC in next

ST, 2 DC in next ST, 1 SL ST in next ST, CH 3, 2 TC in next ST, 1 SL ST in
next 3 ST, CH 3, 2 TC in next 2 ST, 2 SC in next ST, 2 DC in next ST, 2 TC
in next ST, 2 TC in last ST, SL ST to 1st TC. Tie off leaving tail long enough
to sew in place.

Sew all your spots you have made on to your hat. Like I said before it
is art have fun with it there is not right or wrong way to sew or place
your spots on this hat.

Snout: Red Heart-Buff and K hook

Note: The 1st number in the ( ) will be for 0-3, 3-6 and 6-24 months. The
Second number in the ( ) will be for 3-10 years and Teen-Adult sizing.
Follow these numbers accordingly

CH (10, 13)

RND 1. 1 HDC in second CH from hook, 1 HDC in next (7, 10) CH, 4

Nostrils: G Hook and Chocolate – MAKE 2

Start by making the Magic Ring, CH 2

RND 1: 6 HDC in ring, Tighten, SL ST to 1st HDC

Tie off leaving tail long enough to sew on.
Sew Nostrils on to the “Snout” lining them up with RND 2
Then lightly stuff the “Snout” and sew centered to the front of the hat
1 RND up from the bottom of the hat. Sew around the edges doing
your best to not let the sides of the snout bow out. You want it to
have the effect that it’s standing off the face. Tie off and weave in
your tail.

Horns: Use you K hook with Chocolate and Make 2

Start by making the Magic Ring, CH 1

RND 1. 5 SC in ring, Tighten, SL ST to 1st SC, CH 1(5)

RND 2. 2 SC in same ST, *2 SC in next ST* Repeat *-* till end of RND, SL
ST to 1st SC, CH 1(10)

RND 3 & 4. 1 SC in same ST, *1 SC in next ST* Repeat *-* till end of
RND, SL ST to 1st SC, CH 1(10)

RND 5. *SC2TOG* Repeat *-*till end of RND, SL ST **changing colors to

Butter** to 1st SC, CH 1 (5)
To do this insert hook into 1st SC, pull through Butter color and
proceed to make a SL ST pulling it through your Chocolate loop on
your hook. Pull Chocolate tail tight, and cut Chocolate color, CH 1
with your Butter color.
STUFF THE TOP OF THE HORN BEFORE MOVING ON

RND 6. (Using Butterscotch only) 1 SC in each stitch when you reach

the end of the RND work 1 SC into the 1st SC of this RND without a SL
ST, you will work in a spiral until you have reached 2 inches long.
Measure from the bottom of the Chocolate to the bottom of the
Butterscotch you want it to be roughly 2 inches long.

Tie off leaving tail long enough to sew in place.

Sew to 4th RND of hat from the CROWN (or Magic Circle) to find the
sides the easiest way is to lay hat flat looking at the front and line it
up along the crease.

Eyes: With White and “G” hook Make 2

Start by making the Magic Ring, CH 2

RND 1: 3 HDC, 2 DC, 3 HDC, 2 DC (10) in Ring. Pull tight, SL ST to 1st

HDC, CH 1
STOP here for 0-3, and 3-6 months
Tie off leaving tail long enough to sew on. Sew on buttons
RND 2: 2 HDC in same ST, 2 HDC in next 2 ST, 2 Dc in next 2 ST, 2 HDC
in next 3 ST, 2 Dc in next 2 ST, SL ST to 1st HDC
STOP here for 6-24 months, 3-10 years, Teen/Adult
Tie off leaving tail long enough to sew on. Sew on buttons

Sew on 1 RND above the “Snout”, and sew on black buttons with
white.

Ears: Use Butterscotch and K hook

Start by making the Magic Ring, CH 2

RND 1: 6 HDC in Ring, Tighten, SL ST to 1st HDC (6)

RND 2: CH 1, 1 HDC in same ST, 1 HDC in next ST, 2 HDC in next ST, 1
HDC in next 2 ST, 2 HDC in next ST, SL ST to 1st HDC, CH 1(8)

Note: Skip RND 3 if you are making size 0-3 or 3-6 months and move
to RND 4

RND 3: CH 1, 2 HDC in same ST, 1 HDC in next ST, *2 HDC in next ST, 1
HDC in next ST* Repeat *-* till end of RND SL ST to 1st HDC (12)

RND 4: CH 1, 2 HDC in same ST, *2 HDC in next ST* Repeat *-* till end
of RND, SL ST to 1st HDC (16/24)

RND 5 & 6: CH 1, 1 HDC in same ST, *1 HDC in next ST* Repeat *-* till
end of RND, SL ST to 1st HDC (16/24)

RND 7 & 8: CH 1, *HDC2TOG* Repeat *-* till end of RND, SL ST to 1st

HDC (RND 7- 8/12, RND 8-4/6)

Tie off after RND 8 leaving tail long enough for sewing. Line up 4
RND’s below the “Horns” being sure these are level if not it will be
very noticeable. It makes it easier to find the sides when you lay hat
flat and line up with creases.
Mane:
Using Chocolate
Cut 20 - 5 inch strands
Separate into 4-5 strands bundles this isn’t real science.
Join to the top of the hat around the starting Magic Ring. To do this is
easiest with a hook. Insert your hook where you’d like your tuff of
yarn to be, and fold your bundle of strands in half. With hook grab
the folded end and pull it about half way through. Grab your loose
ends and pull them tightly through your loop. Repeat this till you
have enough hairs.

Separate all your strands. Meaning because you are using 4 ply
worsted weight there are 4 pieces to the strand. Separate all those
strands and trim to desired length.
Booties: Use I hook and Brown
Gauge: (Please check your gauge I crochet tight)
Using “I” hook and HDC with Worsted Weight Yarn
7 stitches to 2 inches
To obtain gauge:
Make a chain a little over 2 inches. Do 1 HDC in 2nd CH from hook
and across. CH 1 turn HDC across until your swatch is a little over an
inch tall. Then count how many stitches you have in 2 inches.
Adjust as needed to obtain my gauge above.
(0-3, 3-6, 6-9, 9-12) Follow size according to ( )
CH (12, 13, 14, 15)
RND 1: 1 HDC in 2nd CH from hook, 1 HDC in next (9, 10, 11, 12) CH’s,
3 HDC’s in last CH, Working on other side of CH, 1 HDC in next (11, 12,
13, 14) CH’s, SL ST to 1st HDC (24, 26, 28, 30) Heel is where you SL ST.

RND 2: CH 1, 2 HDC’s in same ST, 1 HDC in next (9, 10, 11, 12) ST’s, 2
HDC’s in next 5 ST’s, 1 HDC in next (9, 10, 11, 12) ST’s, SL ST to 1st HDC
in back 2 loops only see photo on next page, Change to Butter color
cut and weave in brown tail (30, 32, 34, 36)

At this point you have finished working the bottom of the bootie and
we are now going to transition to the top of the bootie. Please
measure your sole it should measure from toe to heel approximately
3.5 inches for 0-3 months, 4 inches for 3-6 months, 4.5 inches for 6-9
months and 5 inches for 9-12 months. If it does not measure
appropriately that means your gauge is off please go back and
double check your gauge.
RND 3: CH 1, Working in back 2 loops (See photo. You do not want to
work in the front loop this will help turn you in and create a textured
line) 1 HDC in same ST, 1 HDC in next (29, 31, 33, 35) ST’s, SL ST to 1st
HDC (30, 32, 34, 36)

RND 4: Working in top 2 loops from here on unless I state otherwise.

CH 2, 1 DC in same ST, 1 DC in next 2 ST’s, 1 HDC in next (25, 27, 29,
31) ST’s, 1 DC in next 2 ST’s, SL ST to 1st HDC, Tie off and weave in your
tail (30, 32, 34, 36)
Fold Bootie in half following the foundation chain along the sole of
the bootie. Count (8, 9, 10, 11) stitches from toe to heel (heel is
where your SL ST’s are) on each side of the bootie mark each stitch
with a stitch marker. You will have a total of (16, 18, 20, 22) stitches
between the markers (counting the marked stitches).
Create a SL knot with your Butter color and join to the back 2 loops
of one of your stitches that have been marked with a SL ST, CH 1.

Row 5: Working in back 2 loops only (like you did the sole), 1 HDC in
same ST, 1 HDC in next (15, 17, 19, 21) ST’s, CH 1, turn, (16, 18, 20, 22)
you can now remove your stitch markers

Note: From here on out you will need to all 3 loops. What this means
is when making a HDC you will create your normal top 2 loops, but
there will also be one on the back side of the stitch. When you turn
your work that back loop is facing you. I want you to put your hook
under that loop and the top 2 loops. This will make it so you are
working under all 3 loops instead of the normal top 2 (Also known as
picking up the back loop).
Row 6: 1 HDC in next (4, 5, 6, 7) ST’s, HDC2TOG 4 times, 1 HDC in next
(4, 5, 6, 7) ST’s, CH 1, turn, (12, 14, 16, 18)
Row 7: 1 HDC in next (2, 3, 4, 5) ST’s, HDC2TOG 4 times, 1 HDC in next
(2, 3, 4, 5) ST’s, CH 1, turn, (8, 10, 12, 14)
Stop here for 0-3 months and move to Row 11
Row 8: 1 HDC in next (1, 2, 3) ST’s, HDC2TOG 4 times, 1 HDC in next (1,
2, 3) ST’s, CH 1, turn, (6, 8, 10)
Stop here for 3-6 months and move to Row 12
Stop here for 6-9 months and move to Row 11
Row 9: 1 HDC in next ST, HDC2TOG 4 times, 1 HDC in next ST, CH 1,
turn, (6)
Stop here for 9-12 months and move to Row 12
Row 11: (For 0-3 and 6-9 months only) HDC8TOG, (this is the same as
HDC2TOG except you YO and go through 8 stitches instead of just
the two) Tie off and weave in your tail. Move to Row 13.
Row 12: (For 3-6 and 9-12 months only) HDC6TOG, (this is the same
as HDC2TOG except you YO and go through 6 stitches instead of just
the two) Tie off and weave in your tail. Move to Row 13.

Working on the Heel: You need you make a SL Knot with your Butter
Color and join with a SL ST, CH 1 (Back 2 loops only like sole) to either
stitch next to the 2 stitches you marked with a stitch marker.
Row 13: (Working in Back 2 loops on HDC’s and Back loops on DC’s)
1 HDC in same ST, 1 HDC in next 13 ST’s (14) Tie off weave in your tails
With Brown create a SL knot and join with SL ST, CH 1 to any stitch in
the back of the bootie. 1 SC in same ST and 1 SC in each stitch
around the top of the bootie, SL ST to 1st SC and tie off weaving in
your tails

If you want to add some tassels in the front you just need to cut 3-4, 4
inch strands of brown and join them to the top of the bootie and pull
apart the strands like you did the tuff on the top of the giraffes head.
Diaper Cover: Use K hook and Butter Color
(0-3, 3-6, 6-9, 9-12) Follow size according to ( )
CH (25, 27, 29, 31)
Row 1: 1 HDC in 2nd CH from hook, 1 HDC in next (23, 25, 27, 29) CH’s,
CH 1, turn
Row’s 2-(5, 6, 7, 8): 1 HDC in next (24, 26, 28, 30) ST’s, CH 1, turn
Row’s (6, 7, 8, 9): HDC2TOG, 1 HDC in next ST until 2 ST’s are left in the
Row, HDC2TOG, CH 1, turn. Repeat this Row 7 more times. At the end
of your 7th repeat of the Row you should have (8, 10, 12, 14)
Row’s 14-(24, 26, 28, 30): 1 HDC in next (8, 10, 12, 14) ST’s, CH 1, turn
Row (25, 27, 29, 31): 2 HDC in 1st ST, 1 HDC in each ST across ending
with 1 ST left in the Row, 2 HDC in last ST, CH 1, turn. Repeat this Row 6
more times. At the end of your 6th repeat of the Row you should
have (22, 24, 26, 28) ST’s
Row (32, 34, 36, 38): 1 HDC in next (22, 24, 26, 28) ST’s, CH 1, turn,
Repeat this row 5 more times for a grand total of 6 Rows. Tie off
leaving your tail long enough for sewing up the side.
With tail sew up the side edges of the diaper cover, tie off and
weave in your tails.
Spots: Use Chocolate and K hook
Start by making the Magic Ring, CH 2

RND 1. 8 HDC in Ring, Tighten, SL ST to 1st HDC, CH 1

RND 2. 2 HDC in same ST, 2 DC in next ST, 2 TC in next ST, 2 DC in next

ST, 2 SC in next ST, CH 3, 2 TC in next 2 ST, 2 DC in last ST, SL ST to 1st
HDC. Tie Off leaving tail long enough to sew in place.

Place anywhere on the diaper-cover and sew in place. Fun thing

about this is you can make as many as you’d like and place them
anywhere you’d like.
Tail: Use K hook and Butter Color
Start by making the Magic Ring, CH 2
RND 1: Make 6 HDC’s in Magic Ring, tighten ring and SL ST to 1st HDC
RND 2: CH 1, 1 HDC in same ST, 1 HDC in next 5 ST’s, SL ST to 1st HDC
Repeat RND 2 till it reaches approximately 4 inches give or take the
length is up to your and your taste.
Tie off leaving tail long enough to sew on to the diaper-cover.
Cut about 8, 8 inch strands of brown yarn and attach to the side of
the tail with the Magic Ring. Do this the same way you attached the
tuff of hair on the hat. Pull apart strands and stuff the tail if desired.
Sew to the backside of the diaper cover and tie off weaving in your
tails.
